Who is the Holy Spirit?

Updated on January 2, 2013

The movement of the Holy Spirit

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters (Genesis 1:1).

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the trinity. By trinity I mean the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Here is the mystery of the Godhead, even though their are three persons, yet they are one. The best way that I have found to look at this is through the following example, I'm one person with different functions. I'm a Father and grandfather at home. On my previous job, I was a child care aide, and in church, I'm a minister. I'm one person with four different functions.Jesus sits on the right hand of the Father making intercession according to Hebrews 7:25, while the Holy Spirit remains in the earth. Jesus said it's expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away the comforter will not come (John 16:7). As Jesus went back to the Father after his finished work on the cross, the Holy Spirit came and remains in the earth. His main functions in the earth are to convict and convince men of sin (John 16:8). This convicting is necessary because without it people would not come to Jesus through the born again experience (John 14:6). One of the attributes of the Holy Spirit is He is always moving. Genesis 1:1 says The Spirit of God Moved upon the face of the waters. In Matthew 3:16 we find the Holy Spirit descending like a dove. In Acts 2 he is as a rushing mighty wind. Why is the movement of the Holy Spirit important? Because he will move us at times toward our purpose in relation to the will of God. Notice Judges 13:25 says and the Spirit of the Lord (Holy Spirit) began to move Samson at times in the camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.

The Holy Spirit will move us toward our God given purpose

The personality of the Holy Spirit

Howbeit when he the Spirit of truth is come he will guide you into all truth (John 16:13a).

The bible will use use Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost in different verses of scripture but they mean the same thing. Notice the Holy Spirit has a personality in the above verse. HE is not an it or ghost as some may think, he is a HE! He is a perfect gentlemen who will not force himself upon no one. Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as HE in John 16:8 when he says and when HE is come, HE will reprove the world of sin. John 16:14 Jesus also says HE shall glorify me, for HE shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

The Holy Spirit has his own unique personality

The functions of the Holy Spirit

John 16:7 - Comforter (Greek = Paraclete) one called along side to help

He helps us to pray when we don't know what to pray for as we ought (Romans 8:26)

John 16:13 - He is the Spirit of truth which means he reveals the truth of the word of God

Everywhere you see the Holy Spirit,he brings life to the word of God. Jesus is the word personified according to John 1:1

In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.

The word was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14) = Jesus
