World Cup or World Cut: Africa Was Fully Represented at the 2018 Soccer World Cup
Kudos to France. If I'm not mistaken, France is the first African soccer team to reach World Cup finals three times (1998, 2006 & 2018) and win the World Cup Championship twice (1998 and 2018). To the extent that the French team has been overwhelmingly represented by players of the African descent for quite some time now, it's not exactly wrong to call the French team an African team as far as soccer is concerned--over 60% of France's players have connections to Africa.
This brings me to the point I wanted to make: FIFA rules should be reviewed to allow continental supper teams to blossom. Secondly, the roster of teams should be expanded to 64 or more teams instead of just 32 to give a chance to other countries to showcase their soccer talents. Thirdly, continents should be proportionately represented at World Cups. For instance in terms of population, Asia has the largest population in the world - 4.5 billion; Africa - 1.1 billion; Europe - 739 million; Antarctica - 4,490; Australia - 29 million; North America - 542 million; and South America - 392 million.
So, how proportionately were continents represented at the 2018 Soccer World Cup? You be the judge. This disproportional representation of continents corroborates my argument that FIFA's criteria for selecting qualifying teams for World Cup should be revised. Owing to the fact that the continents of Asia and Africa have the largest populations in the world, they should be given a chance to field more teams at the World Cup. Furthermore, each continent should be given a chance to host the World Cup--issues of security or insecurity are not convincing excuses; after all, many poor people have lived in those insecure areas all their lives, and they are human beings, too.
I reasonably believe that expanding the World Cup roster of teams, continents fielding teams commensurate with their population size, and allowing each continent to host the World Cup would be a great source of revenue streams for developing continents-- or any continent for that matter--and would go a long way in promoting the game of soccer around the world. Congratulations Team France!
