Commute By Bike- It's good for you!

Commuting to work by bike can be a great way to save money, get fitter and also have a less stressful commute to work.

However urban cycling can be pretty demanding upon your bicycle and particularly your bicycle tires. Urban cycling can lead to increased risks of punctures. As well as a requirement for grip and longevity due to the often imperfect nature of bicycle paths and inner city roads.

The best bicycle tires for commuting to work.

Below are a selection of the best bicycle tires available for commuting to work by bicycle.

Whether you're looking at fitting commuter or road tires to your mountain bike for a smoother, faster commute. Or simply upgrading the tires on your road bicycle for something more puncture resistant and comfortable for urban riding..

Schwalbe Durano Tires: Hardwearing all purpose tyres

Schwalbe Durano Tires for exceptional durability for bicycle commuting

If you're looking for a commuter bicycle tire to almost fit and forget about for a long time, the Schwalbe Durano tire could be the one for you. The manufacturer claims it has a lifetime of up to 6500 miles (over 9000 km)

Almost as light as a specific road racing tire the Schwalbe Durano is as equally tailored to the daily bicycle commute as it is to road racing, winter training and sportive events due to it's raceguard puncture protection and grippy, fast feeling rubber tread.

The Schwalbe Durano is the CyclingFitness choice for a winter training tire that you can train and commute on all year round. They've been raced on in the pouring rain without any grip issues and they feel relatively fast as well.

Commuting can be hard on your bicycle tires so it's a good idea to invest in quality tires for your commuter needs

The Ultra Gatorskin is Continental's top long distance durability tire and has excellent capabilities as a great commuter tire for cycling to work thanks to it's duraskin construction together with an aramid breaker for puncture reistsance over those early morning commutes

Special vectran kevlar webbing on the sidewalls add for additional long term durability for commuting

It's a fast rolling tire which makes it ideal for year round road cycling and training. This tire is a particular favourite for use for road cycling training over the rough European winter and should last a good 3000 miles

Can I put road tires on a mountain bike?

You can purchase some fantastic road style commuter tires to fit to your mountain bike for a quicker smoother commute by bicycle.

Many mountain bikes have a 26 inch wheel so look for this when you look for road type smooth tires for your mountain bike rims.

Kenda K838 slick commuter tires for your mountain bike

If you have a mountain bike you could consider a great value set of Kenda K838 commuter tires. They are designed for a 26 inch mountain bike rim while having a large air capacity to provide comfort over a rough urban commute.

Grooves in the tread help to channel away water from the tread to provide consistent grip commuting on wet roads. While a puncture resistant centre strip under the main tread provides long term puncture resistance.

Semi Slick mountain bike tires for commuting

Kenda K908 Pathfinder Wire Bead Bicycle Tire, Blackwall, 26-Inch x 1.95-Inch

A slick central tread limits rolling resistance while lugged outer edges help to provide grip on rough surfaces

Commuter tires for roads and trails

Sometimes your bicycle commute doesn't always involve just roads and tarmac cycle paths and therefore a slick road style tire may not give you sufficient grip on rough gravel trails

For riding on some rough roads and gravel paths a semi- slick bicycle tire will often help like the Kenda Pathfinder tire pictured which offers a smooth central tread to limit rolling resistance on road and tarmac cycle paths. While having outer grippy sections of tread for when the going gets a little rougher.

Thanks Dan. It's always nice to know they're a good choice from someone who's riding them. As a road rider I have had to go by others' recommendations regarding mtb road tire choices. Thanks again

Great tire information. I just put the Kenda slicks you recommended on my mountain bike. I've been doing more road riding than trail riding lately. So far, I am very pleased with the performance and comfort.
