Eagles-Lions Postgame: I'm Not Thankful for This Eagles Team

Updated on November 27, 2015

I can't believe even the most blindly loyal Eagles fans watched that entire 45-14 debacle on Thanksgiving. I mean, I had people actually tell me that the Eagles were still a good team and Chip Kelly was still a great coach before the Eagles got embarrassed for the second straight week, but those people can't actually exist any longer can they? Being a fan is one thing, but this Eagles team doesn't deserve their fans any longer.

This Philadelphia Eagles team has clearly quit on head coach Chip Kelly. Those would be the same players that GM Chip Kelly hand-picked for his gimmicky college offense that NFL defenses figured out last year.

Even the local media isn't backing Chip Kelly and the Eagles any longer

After giving up 45 points to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, the Eagles have now allowed 90 points in the last two games. To put that in perspective, this is the first time in the history of the franchise that the Eagles have given up 45 points or more in consecutive games. That is pathetic. And to think that we actually thought the defense couldn't possibly be any worse than last season. Well, this is what happens when an idiot owner gives complete control of the franchise over to a guy with absolutely no NFL personnel experience and zero playoff wins after only two years of coaching in the NFL.

Please sell the franchise, Jeffrey Lurie. You are a horrible owner and the Eagles will never win anything while you are the owner of the team.

The game? I watched a little bit, but seriously, why would anyone want to ruin their holiday by watching a bunch of guys stealing money? I played football in the morning and then spent time with my family enjoying a nice Thanksgiving dinner. I only bothered to watch the game that was on the TV every once in a while when I wanted to laugh at a bunch of quitters. But I saw enough to know that this is a bad football team that will not win another game this season. I also looked up some of the ugly, ugly statistics the Eagles produced.

We have to start with a defense that allowed 45 points for the second consecutive game, right? They even allowed a QB to throw 5 TD passes for the second week in a row as well. Billy Davis has to lose his job, if not today, at least at the end of the season. Kelly deserves to go as well, but something tells me Lurie isn't that smart.

Lions QB Matthew Stafford completed 27 of 28 passes for 337 yards and those 5 TDs. He did not throw an interception. In fact, the Eagles defense hasn't forced a turnover in three whole games. The only turnover they have gotten during this three-game losing streak was produced by TE Zach Ertz. Yes, really. Detroit WR Calvin Johnson is a future Hall of Famer, but this was a great game, even by his lofty standards. Johnson caught 8 passes for 93 yards and 3 TDs. The yardage and TDs could have been double if the Lions had to keep trying to win in the second half. They didn't. The really amazing part is how often Davis decided to cover Johnson with just one defender, even when that defender was a rookie CB, who was a safety in college. It's not Eric Rowe's fault he got torched. He's simply not that good and Davis isn't a good defensive coordinator.

The Eagles run defense actually didn't play as horribly as they have in recent weeks. Then again, they had nowhere to go but up after allowing 283 yards rushing last week. They managed to hold the NFL's worst rushing attack to 108 yards on 30 carries. But again, the Lions are the worst running team in the league, so how much of an accomplishment is this?

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mark Sanchez was under pressure all game and sacked 6 times

On the other side of the ball, things were just as bad. Mark Sanchez actually didn't throw an interception for a change and the Eagles offense still only managed to score 14 points, with the help of a garbage time TD. This being Mark Sanchez though, he did manage to fumble the ball away once when he was sacked. It's what he does.

Sanchez was under pressure all day for a few reasons. The Lions got a big lead and were able to tee off on Sanchez, sacking him 6 times. LT Jason Peters got hurt again and left the game in the first quarter. The rest of the offensive line stinks, thanks to Kelly completely ignoring the unit the last three years after drafting RT Lane Johnson. And the WRs on this team are putrid. Jordan Matthews had 3 catches for 60 yards and a TD, but the rest of the WRs combined for 6 catches for 54 yards. So much for Chip Kelly being an offensive genius. He picked this collection of garbage.

Speaking of garbage that Kelly picked, DeMarco Murray is driving the bus of players who have quit on Kelly. Murray was called out by a teammate after he slid to avoid contact against the Dolphins and now he only gained 30 yards on 14 carries against Detroit. That 2.7 yards per carry average is not what he is being paid for. Apparently, if he isn't running through gaping holes created by a good offensive line, he is not a good RB. He also doesn't seem to be a RB who has any heart. Ryan Mathews can't recover from his concussion soon enough. Murray needs to be benched.

Here are a few more random observations from looking at the stat sheet:

  • Detroit had 28 first downs, the Eagles only had 14.
  • Detroit gained 105 yards in the 2nd quarter, the Eagles had Negative 9.
  • DeMeco Ryans is done.
  • Apparently the best player on the entire Eagles roster is a rookie LB who is now out for the season.
  • Rex Ryan is laughing his ass off at Chipper after trading him injury-prone Kiko Alonso for RB LeSean McCoy.
  • The NFL passer rating system is rather confusing. How does Mark Sanchez produce a 116.1 rating with that performance (19-for-27-199 yards-2 TD-0 INT)?
  • Vinny Curry had both of the Eagles sacks and can hardly get on the field this season. Yeah, that makes sense.
  • The Eagles are now 5-10 in their last 15 games.
  • The Eagles have lost to 3 teams in the last 12 days that were 7-17 at the start of this stretch by a combined score of 110-43.

I don't care what the standings say, or how bad the rest of the NFC East is? This Eagles team is a dumpster fire. Winning just one more game this season would be a mistake. Even the most clueless Eagles zealot has to see that truth now, right? Of course, with the New England Patriots up next, it's not like there is any chance the Eagles get their season turned around next week anyway. That's a good thing.

It's time to lose the rest of the games and finish with a 4-12 record. If that happens, the Eagles will be forced to make radical changes. At least I hope they will. Lurie is very conscious of the team's image and, with each loss; Chip Kelly is getting nastier and more condescending in his news conferences. He can't be allowed to continue to run this franchise into the ground. It's already hit rock bottom.....or maybe not.

The Eagles tried to ruin my Thanksgiving, but I already knew this team wasn't worth me wasting my time watching every play when they aren't even giving an honest effort. The problem is, I'm sure there are still Eagles fans out there who still believe. I feel sorry for those people. They are delusional. Oh well, maybe Santa will bring them a nice Sam Bradford jersey for Christmas.
