First thoughts:

When I first saw these trail shoes was on twitter and In awe was because it was a unique looking shoe to me. More of an outer space looking gear then from earth. They looked comfortable, rugged, extremely colorful and they did not look but like your typical low profile hiker. Once I did my research, I realize the purpose for the shroud and its color and how the RockyS2V Resection Athletic Trail Shoe was made for extreme sports and survival. What a brilliant idea!

Intendent Purpose: The Rocky trail shoe is advertised as per RockyS2V.com as a “Men’s Extreme Sport and Trail Shoe”, i.e. hiking or running on gravel or rock trails, trekking through shallow creeks and as stated above, its snowshoe compatible.

Hawaii's weather changes from day to day and to what area you live in. One thing is for sure, Hawaii has many more days of sun, heat and humidity and very little to no cold weather on the Island of Oahu. You have dry areas, almost dessert like region to the Northwest portion of the Island and the famous Tropical Region (Rain Forest) of the West- Southwest side (Windward) of the island. Time spent here on THIS Island has produce no snow so I have not tested the Rocky Trail Shoes on snowy conditions. I have hiked with the Rocky Trail Shoes for nearly 6 months and have trek over 150 miles on off-road trails and some running and walking on the blacktop. You have your typical trials with water crossings, gravel tops, flat out sharp and unstable rocks, steep mountain ascends and descends.

I will give you my thoughts on the RockyS2V Resection Athletic Trail Shoes’ resilience to the water, durability and performance on rocks, dirt and sand. Sand you say? Well, I do live on a tropical paradise! Also, how comfortable are the Resection Athletic Trail Shoes on the trail.

How did the RockyS2V Athletic Trail Shoe preformed on water?

The RockyS2V trail shoes has a VapourFlex® four-way stretch shroud that makes them waterproof and the material breathable. The shoes is made with a waterproof self-locking asymmetrical zipper which keeps water out. How can that that be? Waterproof and breathable?

As you can see from the picture above, I'm standing in my trail shoes almost fully submerged in water. The mud puddle on the trail was about 4 to 6 inches deep and so I had to try it. The shroud is about 6 inches tall to the top of the Velcro. As you can see the trail shoe is nearly submerged yet no water soaked through.(Having wet feet for long periods can lead to cold weather injuries) Furthermore, even when I stood in water checking my map for a few minutes, or the rain was pouring down, my feet did not get wet. Of course when I completely dunked my feet in a creek or in the ocean, some water did intrude from above the Velcro portion of the shroud. The waterproof capabilities worked well If I was running through a creek, hiking while it rained straight down, or even standing in water for long periods of time. There was a cool feeling sensation once my feet hit the water and if felt as if my feet have gotten wet, but from what I experienced, my feet stayed dry. I can say that RockyS2V Resection Athletic Trail Shoe lives up to the waterproof design with the waterproof fabric and the asymmetric zipper.

Living in an extremely humid (80-95%) environment will make you sweat just standing, let alone trekking through mountains. This heat created a perfect environment to test the moisture-wicking lining and breathable fabric. I impressed how my feet stay dry during my adventures in this constant humid region. Additionally, the fabric quickly dries when it get wet from outside elements. With the elastic tech fabric and the antimicrobial foam footbed, this design have kept my feet dry and well ventilated. That’s a plus for me.

Durability and Performance:

As with any hiking or running shoes, I want them to be durable so that it does not come apart on me. As well as to perform well under various conditions like walking or running on the blacktop, trekking up a mountain, hiking dusty or overgrown trail, mountain biking, shoreline saltwater fishing or just simply taking long walks on the beach with the family. I’ve had the opportunity of the trail to tackle all these conditions with the RockyS2V Resection Athletic Trail Shoes. The construction of the trail shoe with outsoles that feature Vibram® molded rubber compound provided me with a better traction on dirt and gravel or zig zagging up a mountain. I did have some problems with traction in areas that was heavily shaded and the rocks were covered with moss. Along with durability, the soles and shank are constructed of TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) and EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) materials which I felt very stable walking in them hiking up and down the trail. The trail shoes did well walking through dense forest will very little abrasions to the outer materials.

The RockyS2V Resection Athletic Trail Shoes performed well when out on short runs on black top or trails. I did not run marathons in them and wouldn’t recommend to do so, but they are light and stable enough that I felt comfortable running in them without risking injury.

I live in area of Hawaii that in the dry seasons the trails get dusty. The shroud and the Velcro strap are a useful feature during these dusty conditions. Besides keeping water out, the shroud and Velcro combination keeps dust and small aggregate like sand, out. Rock-free shoes during my adventures made for a pleasurable outdoor experience!!

Cons:

Price is a little high for me. Average price is about $130 to $140. I highly recommend taking advantage of sales when available.

I recommend wearing ankle or higher socks to keep the scratchy Velcro off your skin. Also, I had times when the point of the laces would get caught between the Velcro and the skin.

The asymmetrical zipper created some resistance at first. This was impart that I was use to zipping up or down symmetrically.

Comfort:

How comfortable is the RockyS2V Resection Athletic Trail Shoe? I own other brands of trail shoes and they all have their features which make them unique in their respected ways. The experience I’ve observed wearing the Resection Athletic Trail Shoes while running, walking, hiking and biking has left an impression of being a comfortable trail shoe for everyday use. The distinctive shroud and its sturdy yet flexible construction makes an exclusive experience out on the trial. I recommend anyone to try out RockyS2V Resection Trail Shoes.

Safety Feature
