Joey Martin re-signs for a 7th season
Cardiff Devils record EIHL points scorer returns for a 7th straight season after joining under the new ownership in 2014/15. Martin was announced as captain for the 2019/20 after previous captain Jake Morissette announced his retirement after the 2018/19 season. Martin had worn an A on his jersey for the 3 previous seasons working under his predecessor Morissette.
After a shortened season due to injury at the start and the abrupt ending, Martin recorded 36 points in 37 league games. In his 6 seasons as a Devil, this season was Martin's first below a point per game in league play after multiple seasons of well over a point per game in both league and cup.
Martin was a big miss for the Devils at the beginning of the season especially for the CHL, a competition in which he scored 5 points (3+2) in 6 games last season. Martin was only able to play both games against eventual champions Frolunda and recorded 2 points (1+1) in the 2 games. Martin's miss was slightly covered by the short term signing of Matias Sointu but filling the big shoes of Joey Martin is no easy task.
Martin has scored 365 points (135+230) in 305 league games for the Devils which makes him their top EIHL points scorer after climbing above former leader Max Birbraer. In all competitions Martin has 487 points (182+305) in 402 games giving him a points per game total of 1.21. A very impressive point per game total for a forward who has also almost averaged a point per game in CHL action in the Devils 3 years in the competition.
With Martin joining Haddad for the 2020/21 Devils roster, the Devils have managed to re-sign 2 of their 3 highest points scorers of last season. Re-signing the remaining top point scorer Gleason Fournier would be a massive signing which also allows the Devils to retain the majority of the core that has had success over the past 4 seasons under the new ownership.
