Poker player styles and strategies

Updated on February 5, 2020

Hello. Here I will show you some of the strategies poker players will use at the tables. By using these guidelines I hope it will be able to help you identify Certain players game plans strategies and styles at a poker table thus making you a more successful poker player.

I will go through a list of styles most poker players adopt whether this be recreational, professional Or a mixture of the two.

Tight Players- a tight player will often sit at a table and wait for the perfect hand. The hand they be looking for will often be high percentage hands, anything from an Ace king too pocket pairs. These players can often last very long time and do not tend to be shook by minimal chips. Often they will go very far into a tournament surviving purely on high ranking hands and small wins.

How to play a tight player- This can be very easy. By knowing what they are waiting for you know what type of hands you will be in whenever you come up against them. It's important to maintain your strategy of knowing when you are beat and what type of hands will be beating by these type of players. For instance if you get drawn an ace, Jack and the flop comes Ace king 2 and the player goes all in. There will be a large chance that you are losing the hand, just because you had the high pair doesn't mean you're winning against this type of player. This is the hand that they have been waiting for and this is how they will beat you if you do not follow through with your strategy. The Strategy that works well against these type of players Is, coming into a hand as cheap as you can and looking to see as many flops as you can fairly cheaply. This will allow you to have the surprise Factor when you hit your miracle flop. Again this by no means is the only strategy you should use But it is one that will prove very profitable for you if you can use it more frequently than you don't.

Aggressive/loose players- Aggressive/loose players look to play lots of pots. Raise a lots of the times and look to put you under severe pressure every time in the hand. The range for these type of players doesn't really come into it as they look to Play many hands. Big bets raising flops all come into play by these type of players and just because the board doesn't look like it hits anything much it doesn't necessarily mean they have nothing. Bare that in mind

Playing against aggressive/loose players- There's no real set out strategy how to play against these players it all comes down to a look of the table and a feel of the hands that you have entered into with them. For instance if you feel that they have cant have a really good hand by the feel of the play leading up to a big bet often they can't and your two pairs or high pair will often be solid and good. A raise over the top of you doesn't necessarily mean they will now be beating you and it is a hand that you will have to have balls to call if you would look to maximise your profit against these type of players. A lot of the time these players won't have any Premium hand such as Three of a Kind, Straights and flushes. If they are hit they will often be lucky hands. Get a feel of the table and understand your opponent. It's not a problem to sit back for a few hands and watch how they play certain hand types.

The statistics player- statistics players are exactly that, they study stats, they study probabilities and percentages of hands and see how often certain hands, cards, or suits will come out. These players are often for professionals. If not fully professional very close to making a living from the game, this is their money earner and don't be surprised if they Beat you. They beat plenty.

How to beat a statistical player- if everyone knew this everyone will be a poker Pro, the fact is there is no clear strategy and how to be these type of players. They are very good. They are successful and their return of investment is often high. One way to combat this. Is to look to be unpredictable yourself. Look to get into only premium hands thus decreasing your chances of a bad run out. They often like to play connecting cards like 9/10 suited as they know that these hand are disguised when hit and can maximize profit per hand. Look to play similar hands against them and try to avoid playing poor starting hands as much as possible. These are the real players to watch out for at a table. There is some upsides to having them on the table though. Often having a winning hand against them is very profitable.

All in all have fun, and never bet what you can't afford to lose. Develop your own style and if you feel one aspect is not working for you dont be to stubborn to change it. Poker evolves all the time, it's important to keep up with the game or it will leave you behind.
