Reds Say So Long Janish! Hello First Place.....Again and For Good!

No sooner had MLB Network/Fox Baseball America's sidekick Tom Verducci remarked that the St. Louis Cardinals had purchased reliever Victor Marte from the Kansas City Royals for one whole U.S. dollar than the feeling that the end was near became palpable.

After Cincinnati Reds leftfielder Ryan Ludwick ran the count full on Marte with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, that one dollar special was looking a little green around the gills.

And sure enough when Ludwick smoked a frozen rope over the left field wall of Great American Ballpark, you could hear Eddie Murphy hollering at the top of his lungs from the bleachers:

"What a bargain!"

The Reds 3-2 win in extras over the Cardinals put them in sole possession of first place pending the outcome of the Pittsburgh Pirates game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Reds are now poised to make it easier on themselves and go on a tear to distance themselves in short order from the rest of the pack.

Besides second place, the Reds also said goodbye to a minor poet of their 2010 N.L. Central Division winning team, shortstop Paul Janish.

Janish never materialized at the plate strong enough to win the shortstop job, which has now been seized by Zack Cozart, but he was nevertheless a fine glove for the Reds.

The Reds snagged minor league starting pitcher Todd Redmond from the Braves in a move that could pay some dividends for the Reds in their playoff push as a spot starter to give Cueto and Latos breathers in advance of the post-season.
