As we know the World Cup is only one year away. This means only one thing, it is time for the Confederation Cup. This is a tournament that consists of eight teams and is consisted of the Champions nations from every continent. I always find it interesting to watch as the tournament is a little preview before the actual World Cup. I wanted to share to everyone a little info about every and each champion of the tournament since its beginning in 1992. The tournament was first hosted in Saudi Arabia and was named King Fahd Cup. In 1992 the tournament was renamed to the Confederation Cup. Here is the list of all the Champions of the Confederation Cup Tournament.

We will start with the first tournament that was in 1997.

Saudi Arabia (1997)

Champion : Brazil


Saudi Arabia was the first country to host the tournament after the tournament was renamed to Confederation Cup. The tournament consisted of eight teams. Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, South Africa, Czech Republic, Australia, United Arab Emirates. The goalscorer of the tournament was Romario with 7 goals in 5 matches. The best player of the tournament was Denilson also from Brazil. The final game took place in Riyadh and the game was between Brazil and Australia. Brazil won the game with the score of 6:0, where Ronaldo and Romario both recorded hat-tricks. The match for third place was between Czech Republic and Uruguay which the Czech Republic won 1:0. Brazil was the first champion of the Confederation Cup Trophy Tournament.

Mexico (1999)

Champion: Mexico


The second Confederation Cup took place in Mexico, prior the World Cup 2000 in France. The tournament again consisted of eight teams from every continent. Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Bolivia, Egypt, United States, New Zealand. The goalscorer of the tournament was Ronaldinho, and MArzuoq Al-Otaibi with 6 goals. The golden ball and best player of the tournament was awarded to Ronaldinho. The final match was between Mexico and Brazil, which resulted in a 4:3 win for Mexico, which gave them their first confederation title. This tournament was the second time the Brazilian squad reached the final game of the tournament. The third place match was between the United States and Saudi Arabia, in which the U.S. team won 2:0 and clinched the third place spot. The final match took place at Estadio Azteca, which is one of the largest stadiums in the world.

South Korea/ Japan( 2001)

Champion: France


In 2001 it was the third ever Confederation Cup hosted by FIFA, which held place in host countries South Korea and Japan. These two countries also hosted the following World Cup 2002. The teams that played in the tournament were: South Korea, Japan, France, Brazil, Mexico, Cameroon, Canada, and Australia. The top goalscorer of the tournament were five different players that all had two goals Shaun Murphy, and Robert Pires, were the two players that were most notable. The golden ball and player of the tournament was Robert Pires from France. The final match took place in Yokohoma International Stadium and it was between the teams France and Japan, which resulted in a 1:0 win for France. This was the first appearance for France in the tournament and it was their first Confederation Cup title. The third place game was between Australia and Brazil, which Australia won 1:0 and secured the third place in the tournament. The tournament is also the lowest scoring Confederation Cup tournament with only 31 goals in 16 matches.

France (2003)

Champion: France(2nd title)


The fourth Confederation Cup took place in France. France were the previous tournament winner in 2001 in South Korea and Japan. The teams that played in the tournament were: France, Japan, Brazil, Colombia, United States, Cameroon, Turkey, and New Zealand. The goalscorer of the tournament was Thierry Henry with 4 goals. He was also named best player of the tournament. The final game was held at Stade de France in Paris. The game was between France and Cameroon. The result of the game was 1:0 for France, which gave France their second in a row Confederation Cup Title. The game winner came in extra time in 97th minute with a goal by Thierry Henry. During the Trophy ceremony the French team invited the Cameroon team to come up and join them in the lifting of the trophy in Tribute to the Cameroon football player Marc Vivien Foe, who died during a football game in the Semi-final game between Cameroon and Colombia. During the 72th minute Foe collapsed suddenly and died on the pitch. All the games during the tournament after the incident started with a moment of silence in remembering of Foe. The third place match was between Turkey and Colombia which ended in a 2:1 win for Turkey.

Germany (2005)

Champion: Brazil (2nd title)


The fifth Confederation title game took place in Germany prior to the 2006 World cup.The teams that participated in the tournament were : Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Tunisia, Greece, Argentina, Japan, and Australia. The top goalscorer of the tournament was the Brazilian star Adriano with 5 goals. He was also named the golden ball winner of the tournament. The final match took place at Waldstadion in Frankfurt. The final match was between Brazil and Argentina, which the Brazilian side was totally dominating the game and won 4:1 where Adriano scored two goals. This win gave Brazil their second Confederation Cup title, which tied France with two title for the most ever Confederation Cup titles. The third place match was between Germany and Mexico. The game was a goal fiesta with a total of 7 goals, and a game winner by Ballack in extra time to give Germany the third place spot.

South Africa (2009)

Champion: Brazil(3rd title)


The sixth and latest Confederation Cup tournament was held in South Africa prior to the 2010 World cup in South Africa. Teams that participated in the tournament were: South Africa, Italy, United States, Brazil, Iraq, Egypt, Spain, and New Zealand. The top goalscorer of the tournament was Luiz Fabiano with 5 goals. The best player in the tournament was Kaka also from Brazil. The final match was played at Ellis Park Stadium in Johanesburg. The game was between Brazil and United States. This was the fourth final match for Brazil in the tournament. They came up and won the tournament with a 3:2 win. The Brazilian side was losing 2:0 at halftime and came back in the second half and won the game 3:2. This was the third title for the Brazilian squad. The third place game was between Spain and South Africa which the Spanish side won 3:2 in extra time with a game winning goal in the 107th minute by Alonso.

Brazil (2013)

Champion:???


This will be the seventh Confederation Cup since FIFA started hosting it. It will be held in Brazil prior the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The nations that will be participating in the tournament are: Brazil, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Uruguay, Tahiti, Italy, Nigeria. The final game will be held at Estadio do Maracana in Rio di Janeiro. This is the most hyped Confederation Cup tournament as of late. Everyone is expecting an exciting tournament that will be the little preview of the World Cup next summer.       Yes they would've if they did not miss the penalty. :) All in all it was a great tournament, but I can't wait for the World Cup, that is where all the fun is :)

      Yep, Brazil had a blowout....I thought Spain would get at least 1 goal!
