The Major Health Advantages Of Cycling

Updated on November 16, 2012

The benefits of regular physical activity can hardly be ignored by anyone. Having a strong, fit and flexible body can, in fact, do away with the chances of different types of health hazards rearing their heads. However, there is absolutely no reason to assume that, for reaping the benefits of being physically fit, you need to hit the gym on a regular basis, and/or perform complicated (and often, stressful) exercises. In fact, simple bicycle rides can be instrumental in keeping your body protected from a host of medical maladies. You can also set your adrenaline rushing, by cycling on a flashy, stylish sports cycle, like those manufactured by Focus bikes. In the present article, we will be casting a glance at some of the key benefits of regular cycling:

Keeps your weight under check – Cycling, on a daily basis, can help you to burn the excess fat and calories, which might be included in your diet. Provided that you do cycle regularly, the chances of your becoming obese are minimal, to say the least. The pressure that is exerted by the entire body while cycling, also helps riders remain slim.

Builds your overall resistance and stamina levels – For pedaling on your bicycle, you need to move your legs constantly, in an almost up-and-down motion. This automatically helps in building up the muscles of your lower body. In addition, with suitably positioned bike handles, you can also ensure that your arms get enough exercise and freedom of movement.

Diminishes the risks of cardiac problems – Cycling has been proven to be good for the heart. Hence, the chances of sudden strokes or coronary attacks, which can prove to be fatal, can be reduced significantly, by cycling for a few hours regularly. This also helps to stabilize your blood pressure levels.

Develops better body coordination – While cycling, you have to steer with your hands, pedal with your legs, and make sure that your weight is distributed in a manner that your body remains balanced, at all times. These simultaneous functions help you bring about a greater sync and harmony between all parts of your body.

Boosts up life expectancy – If you do cycle a lot, it also has a positive effect on your life-expectancy figures. Measured in terms of a parameter called ‘life years’, it has been established that such positive effects indeed exist. So, you can easily expect to live longer, simply by merrily cycling along!

Develops a sense of competition – If you are fond of cycle racing, or mountain biking (and are actually adept at such activities), you can pit your skills with other competitors, for amateur fun, or on a professional level. All that you need is a high-performance sports bicycle, like the Focus bikes, and you will be all set to get your pulses racing.

Reduces mental stress and depression – An hour of relaxed outdoor cycling can be one of the best ways to de-stress yourself, after a long and tiring day of work at office. Cycling activities help you give expression to your free spirit, and rejuvenate you mentally.

Boosts up overall fitness levels – Cycling regularly can help to regularize breathing habits, has beneficial effects on diabetic patients, and takes up the overall body fitness by several notches. In fact, cycling is also often recommended for people suffering from mild forms of cancer.

While the above points do highlight the several beneficial effects of cycling, you should, ideally, consult your physician, before taking it up as a regular activity. You should not try to burn the roads with a scorching pace, from the very first day of cycling. Develop your sense of balance and poise first. Once you do that, your speeds would automatically increase. You also need to have the best biking equipments at your disposal, for getting all the advantages of cycling. For example, when you are looking for sports cycles, opting for the efficient Focus bikes would indeed be a viable idea. Start cycling regularly, and discover the immense benefits that this easy activity has to offer!

I started cycling after my knee got worn out from running. It is an incredible sport. The only downside is that it takes a little longer to get a good workout, but the advantages are many. The right gear is important too. You don't want to cycle with plan old workout clothes. http://www.squidoo.com/cycling-clothing-for-beginn...
