Diego Maradona (Argentina) vs England, 22 June 1986

Four minutes after his conning – sorry, cunning – had put Argentina ahead in their quarter-final, Diego Maradona displayed his unquestionable class with a solo strike so good it was voted FIFA's Goal of the Century. For me, Maradona stills remains the best soccer player ever played, but wasted most of his career going after drugs and other off field activities.

That's OK ,I find myself following basketball, hockey and baseball after the playoffs start ,and I only follow American Football through the whole season because we make a pool at work to see who gets more game results right every week.thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I like soccer although I only follow it every four years when the world cup comes around. Therefore, I don't think I can make an informed decision about who is the best, but some of Maradona's goals are indeed spectacular. Interesting hub!

That was one of the most embarrassing moments in Uruguay football history. And probably one of the greatest in Denmark's since a team that has done nothing before or after beat one of the historic greats in soccer.

LOL I do miss some great Danes on your list. I was in Mexico, at the World Cup Games, when Denmark won 6-1 over Uruguay.

You make valid points and it is only natural that there will be differences since there have been so many great players.thank you for the comment it's a pleasure to follow you.

I think they would rank 11 and 12 on the list. There is no doubt they have been the two best players of their generation ,but it is also true that they filled a vacuum at a time when international football has the necessity of superstars for economic reasons and they were helped by that.So i wouldn't include them in the best ten in history.thanks for the comment im going to follow you and check out your hubs

Can't argue with the list per se. All great players. I would flip Pele back to #1 only because of his impact in the U.S. He helped grow the game and was a great ambassador around the world. Like the reader above, I would already add Messi and CR. Neither will ever win a World Cup at this point but that's not their fault. As in all other sports, it's hard to compare eras but liked your effort. Voted up.

What about CR7 or Messi? They are best in present times, so it would be fair enough for this list.
