Updated on February 6, 2018
Larry Rankin profile image

Larry Rankin is a sports analyst with an especially strong penchant for statistical breakdowns.

Installment 3 of this database includes states ranking 12-23 in per capita production of NFL players to finish a season with 10 sacks or more. In addition, a player list is included with each state and a statistical description of every performance.

For those of you more interested in an overview of state production ranks both in per capita and overall number of performances, a detailed table can be found in installment 1. Links to this installment and all other installments in this database can be found in the text box to your right.

For those of you interested in other state by state football production rankings presented by Larry Rankin, they can be found by clicking on the Larry Rankin profile or via links at the bottom of this page.

13. North Carolina

Per Capita Score: 213.3

10 Sack Performances: 21

Julius Pepper is still playing and still making sacks, though his most impactful years are probably behind him. His 120 and counting career sacks and 8 career seasons with 10 or more sacks puts him in pretty elite company.

Other players of note: Leonard Little had a fine career and Mario Williams has been a good contributor thus far in the NFL.

14. Ohio

Per Capita Score: 199

10 Sack Performances: 23

Ohio has had its fair share of quality pass rushers, but none who jump off the page as all-time greats.

The best of this list is likely Dana Stubblefield, a massive run stopping defensive tackle also gifted with the speed and athleticism to rush the passer.

Another player of note is James Harrison, an active player who received the AP Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.

15. Pennsylvania

Per Capita Score: 196

10 Sack Performances: 25

Like so many great pass rushers, many of Hall of Famer Randy White’s best years were had before the sack became an official stat. Despite this and the fact he was a DT, a position less geared for the pass rush, he still appears on our list 3 times. One can only speculate, but had sacks been kept during the entirety of his career, he may have been our number one all time sacker from that position.

Also of note for Pennsylvania is Jason Taylor. With 139.5 career sacks and a career that boasts 6 seasons of 10 or more sacks, he is a likely candidate for Canton someday.

Obscure Stat: The tackle didn’t become an official stat until 2001. Jamir Miller’s 81 tackles in 2001 are the most tackles anyone with 10 sacks or more has had during the era of tackles as an official statistic.

16. Connecticut

Per Capita Score: 195

10 Sack Performances: 7

The difference between Connecticut appearing or being a no-show on our list: the birth of Dwight Freeney in Hartford, CT in 1980.

And if you’re a state that only has produced one 10 sack performer, Freeney is a good one to have. He has met or bested the mark 7 times over the course of his illustrious career and still plays in the NFL.

18. Indiana

Per Capita Score: 183

10 Sack Performances: 12

Chris Doleman was a real show stopper. His 21 sacks in 1989 is one of the best pass rushing performances in NFL history, as are his 150.5 career sacks and 8 career 10 or more sack performances.

Doleman was not inducted into the Hall of Fame until 2012, several years after his initial eligibility. This beckons the question, “What on earth were those folks in Canton thinking waiting so long?”

Alaska is our most sparsely populated state in terms of land mass, but it does not boast the smallest population. Travis Hall’s 10.5 sacks in 1997 is Alaska’s only claim to a 10 sack performer, good enough for 21st on our list.

Trace Armstrong met or surpassed the 10 sack mark in 5 seasons over the course of his career. He is also a member of the coveted 100 career sack club. Though he will probably find himself always on the outside looking in, he at least deserves consideration for the Hall of Fame at some point.

Maryland born Cameron Wake is having a promising career so far, and if he can stay healthy, will likely meet the 10 sack mark at least a few more times before he retires.

23. California

Per Capita Score: 128

10 Sack Performances: 49

As usual, California is towards the top of our list in number of performers, but due to being the most populous state in the union, doesn’t fare as well in per capita ranking.

Also as usual, there are a great many big names on California’s list, from Clay Matthews II and III, to Charles Mann and Greg Townsend, and the list goes on.

Obscure Stat: Keith Millard was an undersized interior lineman with a penchant for making the lives of QBs miserable. His 18 sacks at the DT position in 1989 are tied for the most of any defensive tackle.

Dubious Distinction: Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila had a standout career with the Green Bay Packers, but he is tied for one distinction he probably would rather not have. In 2001 he recorded only 18 tackles, tied with Kevin Greene for the fewest tackles for anyone having 10 or more sacks in a season.
