Rent the regulars skie for rank beginners and learn the differences first before plucking down $400.
Rear-entry have less control.
The stiffer and higher the boot the better the control but less comfortable also.
Don't use some friends' skis unless adjusted for you. If the bindings are too tight - break leg, If too loose - they fall off just when you doing well.
Safer to go with rentals for you ski level, weight and snow conditions.
