Cold Steel Recon Scout Knife

Updated on October 20, 2014

Great Survival and Utility Knife

Featuring a classic Bowie design, but with a broad clip point, the Cold Steel Recon Scout is a great utility and survival knife. It is tough, reliable and has an excellent edge holding.

The Recon Scout original model, the 39LRS, featured a SK-5 high carbon blade that has proven to be reliable and tough over the years. Basically, the Recon is a small version of one of the most popular Bowie knives on the market: the Cold Steel Trail Master. The blade of the Recon Scout is 71/2 inches long and comes with a black Teflon finish to prevent rust. The handle is made of Kraton a polymer similar to rubber but tougher and with better resistance to hot temperatures. This material assures a good grip and reduces the shock from chopping.

Cold Steel makes the Recon Scout with a blade of three layers of laminated steel too: The San Mai III 37s. This is the high quality version of the above, and so more expensive. This model features a blade with the center of high carbon steel, for toughness and edge retention, covered with layers of stainless steel along the sides for flexibility and resistance to rust. The handle as the previous model is made of Kraton.

Both models included a sheath, the 39LRS a plastic one and the 37s one made of Cordura.

Advantages:

  • It is really sharp and holds the edge well.
  • It is sturdy
  • The broad tip is tough, it doesn’t bend.
  • The knife feel well in your hand and it is not heavy.
  • The full hilt to protect your hand.

Disadvantages:

  • Expensive, what do you expect for the quality?
  • The 39lrst is made in China (Taiwan,) but the quality is good anyway. Cold Steel doesn't manufacture its knives in a factory of their own, but they set a high standard for quality control.
