Electric Outboard Motors-Minn Kota Trolling Motors Reviews

Updated on February 27, 2012

Minn Kota Trolling Motors

Minn Kota trolling motors are the leader of the pack when it comes to electric outboard motors. Every boating angler out there knows the importance of a good dependable trolling motor to help maneuver them into their favorite fishing spots. From amatures to pros, we all know that our trolling motors are more depended up on than our big gas outboards.

The reason a trolling motor is so crucial to a successful fishing trip is because it allows you to move quietly and efficiently through the water giving you total control of the boat. Trolling motors, often referred to as electric positioning motors, use battery power, not gasoline, to maneuver and power the boat along. There are many variables like thrust, voltage of battery, bow mount or transom mount, shaft length, and foot or hand controls that go into buying a quality trolling motor.

Choosing the Correct Trolling Motor For Your Boat

The Importance Of Thrust

Make sure when choosing a trolling motor for your boat you get one with enough thrust to efficiently move you, your boat and all your gear.

The amount of power or strength needed to move through the water is described as "pounds of thrust." Knowing how much thrust is needed is important when buying a trolling motor. If your trolling motor is to small for your boat you will have trouble maneuvering through waves, on windy days and through weed beds.

Boat weight is the most important consideration to take into account when choosing a trolling motor. A good rule of thumb is that you want a minimum of 2 lbs of thrust for every 100lbs. When figuring boat weight, make sure you calculate the heaviest potential weight which include a boat fully loaded with gear, fuel and the maximum number of passengers.

MAXIMUM WEIGHT(LB)-------------- MINIMUM THRUST(LB)

------1500------------------------------------------ 30

------2000------------------------------------------ 40

------2500 ------------------------------------------50

------3000 ------------------------------------------60

------3500------------------------------------------ 70

------4000------------------------------------------ 80

------4500------------------------------------------ 90

------5000----------------------------------------- 100

The Second most important cosideration when choosing a trolling motor is the length of your boat.

BOAT LENGTH(FT) -----------------------MINIMUM THRUST(LB)

------12'-14'--------------------------------------------35

------14'-16'------------------------------------------- 40

------17' ------------------------------------------------50

------18' ------------------------------------------------55

------19' ------------------------------------------------65

------20'-------------------------------------------------70

------21' ------------------------------------------------80

------22'+----------------------------------------------80-101

Trolling Motor Shaft Length

Choosing a Trolling Motor with the correct shaft length for your boat is important. If the shaft is to long you will continuously have problems with the prop dragging on the bottom when fishing shallow water. This can blow fuses or worse yet damage your prop or shaft.

If the shaft is too short, the prop may not be sufficiently submerged during rough or choppy water and will make it more difficult to maneuver

Saltwater Versus Freshwater Trolling Motors

When looking at saltwater versus freshwater trolling motors the biggest thing is the price difference. The internal workings are basically the same, everything is stainless steel that has to be in both. The biggest difference is the coating on the outside. Freshwater motors have a powder coat over the aluminum housing where the saltwater models use an epoxy base coating. Some say that they use there freshwater motors in saltwater with no problems, but it will void your warranty. I personally wouldn't suggest it , but if you do, make sure you rinse it well every time with freshwater. Treat it like you would your reels.

Saltwater trolling motors can be used in freshwater with no problems.
