Was Joe Namath with the San Francisco 49ers the greatest quarterback of all time?

There have been many great quarterbacks, but Joe Namath was an eagle eye with a deadly aim and a scrambler. Was he the greatest quarterback or was someone else better?

Perhaps.  It's hard to know though, since the quarterback's supporting cast also matters a great deal.  Steve Young had a really good run right after Montana did.

I'd still say he was the best of all time.

As a pro Namath lost more games than he won. John Unitas and Bart Starr were both better in that era. Terry Bradshaw was a consistant winner and won 4 Super Bowls. When was Namath a 49er?

Joe Namath never played for the San Francisco 49ers. He spent most of his career with the New York Jets before playing for the L.A. Rams.

He was not the greatest quarterback to play. He had some very good seasons in the old American Football League, but the final eight years of his career were less than stellar. He was frequently hurt and rarely played full seasons.

Several quarterbacks of his era were better. That would include Johnny Unitas, Bart Starr, Roger Staubach, and Terry Bradshaw. Fran Tarkenton, Ken Stabler, Ken Anderson, and Bob Griese also belong in the conversation. That does not begin to address more recent quarterbacks.
