Roman Abramovich's Eclipse: The World's Largest Yacht

Updated on April 19, 2015

World's Largest Yacht: Eclipse

Do you have a spare 1.2 billion dollars lying around? That is what Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich shelled out for Eclipse, the worlds largest yacht. The ship was constructed by Blohm Voss in Hamburg, Germany, and is 36 feet longer than the world's previous biggest yacht Dubai, which belongs to Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai. Eclipse's initial cost was estimated at 500 million, but reports indicate that final costs more than doubled that number.

Launched on June 12, 2009, Eclipse is now considered the largest and most expensive megayacht in the world.

Yacht Features

Eclipse has two helicopter pads, 11 guest cabins, two swimming pools, numerous hot tubs and a dance hall. The massive ship also comes stocked with three quickly deploy-able speed boats, and a small submarine that is capable of submerging to 160 feet. 70+ crew members are needed to operate the yacht.

Security is foremost on Eclipse. The ship is equipped with a system that can detect unauthorized personnel and a defense system capable of launching missles. Abramovich's yacht also features armor plating and bullet-proof glass in critical parts of the vessel. The ship is also shielded with an privacy feature in the form of lasers that monitor the area, and can shoot a beam of light directly at any cameras aiming to shoot photos of Abromovich or his guests. These deterrents don't run constantly, so Roman's friends can still shoot photographs. They are simply turned on when guards spot what they believe to be the paparazzi is in the area.

What a massive vessel! Eclipse is a suitable name indeed.

Wow. Nice boat. :-) I'd like just the submarine on it, however. ;-)

Even If I were that wealthy, I think it's a little bit overboard (excuse the pun)

I would be shocked if anything I was having made went 500 thousand over, but I guess that's just me....can't even think in these terms. There's an amazing amount of wealth out there and the Eclipse certainly is an example of that. I'm a little short this month, so won't be putting in a bid on this amazingness.

I can't imagine why anyone would want something that big! Nice to see, but not something I'd want, even if I could afford it. Interesting article!

It's certainly a beautiful looking craft but $1.2 billion seems a bit steep for a new plaything so I won't bother getting one (ahem).

What a beautiful ship. He is a very lucky guy to be able to experience such beauty and luxury in this lifetime. I did have my own boat once, but it capsized and sank when I stood up in it one time, lol. Excellent lens very nicely laid out and expressed. Thank you.
