The History of Perfumes, from East to West

The world of perfume comes from the Latin mean through smoke. The history of perfumes start from four thousand years ago. In that time human using perfume for the religious ceremony. They burn incense as offerings to the gods. The development of perfumes also used for fragrances. They used the perfume from mixture of oil and wood fragrant or sap. The famous princess from Egypt, namely Cleopatra using perfume as a charmer. it was said, the Greeks and Romans learned the art of concocting perfume from Egypt people. For a couple hundred of years, the art of Perfume controlled from the east.

The early of 15 century, this art brought to England and French. Perfume well known in all the Europe. In the French, the perfume industry growth rapidly. Chaterine de Medici, the Italian woman who had been married with Henry II, he is a French nobility. They had a role in the development of perfume in all France. And now we all know about perfumes and become million dollar business. With nice packaging , inside the beautiful bottle.

What do you think when you found unpleasant odor, you will close your nose directly. But if you smell fragrant, you will take a deep breath to enjoy that fragrant. That’s normally happen to us. Some people said that they get an inspiration from fragrances. And for the woman right now, they use the good effect of perfume for better appearance.

The reason why a woman use perfume, not only to scent their body or a tool to beautify themselves. But also used as a means to express or communicate the personality and mood of a person. With a sensitive nose and trained, the perfumer (perfume expert) race to produce fantastic perfume. It packed with unique bottle, the creativity of perfumer use beautiful name, mysterious and sometime sensational. Like Shalimar (Guerlain), Chaos (Donna Karran), Poison (Dior), Obsession (Calvin Klein), Cinnabar (Estee Lauder), L'Eau D'Issey (Issey Miyake). They create that name to support an imaging that was attached to the perfume.

Perfume also have a power to change the mood and the human emotion. The expert said that there was a connection between sense of smell with the emotional centers in the brain. When we smell something, a million of cells send the order to the brain. As we know the brain is the center of memory, emotions and human desires. Some research said that specific aroma can involve the human mood, such as: Lavender give calming effect, Vanilla could reduce stress, Bergamot to refresh our mind, Jasmine to overcome uneasiness. And perfume like aromatherapy, believed to cure an illnesses during 4000 years.

The decision to buy a perfume associated with the personality of  person's. Such as the person with introverted personalities will select the gentle fragrance. Sometime our mood and feeling usually change. Sometimes felt sad and for the next time felt happy. For the morning and the afternoon is better to use a light perfume with the flower and leaves fragrance.  In the evening better match with the  perfume formulated using a variety of extracts from flowers or fruit-scented perfumes. For the night we can use classic perfume with a little tease. For the cocktail party, better using heavy perfume and it gave the warm, intimate and romantic impression.

The best time to buy perfume

Before you use the perfume, better know four type of perfume who sold in the market. The four perfume based the concentrate are perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and eau de cologne. Perfume contain 15-30 % perfume concentrate. The aroma can stand about 3 up to 8 hours. Better use this type in the night.  Eau de parfum, this type contain about 8 – 15 %  perfume concentrate. The aroma will end in six hours. Eau de toilette contain about 4 – 8 perfume concentrate. Eau de cologne contain 3 – 5 % perfume concentrate. 

Don’t be fooled by rows of beautiful perfume bottles, scent fragrance from perfume sample paper. The chemical process from the human body will produce different smell. This influenced by the skin condition, life style and eating pattern. There is no guarantee that perfume will give a good fragrant when it use for somebody and it suitable for them. Don’t let the others intervence your decision. The best way is try to spray directly on you skin. Let it for a while. For the first you will smell strong aroma, it called the first note. In a short time, this smell will disappear.  It changed with the middle note (middle aroma). This is the core of perfumes will stand about one hour. The last is the base notes (the last aroma). This part will stand very long time.

Some tips for you:

  • Store the perfume in a cool place and dry. Avoid perfumes from the sunlight or hot areas.
  • If you have dry skin, use perfume much than before, usually perfume will last long in the oily skin.
  • To prevent sweaty palms. You can spray a little eau de clogne or eau de toilette in the palm of the hand and rub it.
  • Clothes not an ideal place to spray the perfume. The ideal place are artery, behind the ears, wrists, under the front of the neck, behind knees, on the inside of the elbow.
