Great Prom Handbags and Clutches

Updated on March 14, 2011

If you’re going to prom, ya gotta have a handbag, right? That big pocketbook you take to school every day isn’t going to cut it. Yeah, it might be large enough to hold all your makeup, your billfold, your hairbrush, your cologne, and an extra set of clean clothes, but it would totally ruin your perfect prom look!

For prom, you’ll need an evening bag or clutch. It should be small and elegant – just large enough to hold a small compact, some lipstick, some tissue, a mini bottle of perfume, and your driver’s license or ID. It’s up to you whether you choose one with or without a strap. If you plan on carrying your bag with you to the dance floor, I strongly suggest one with a strap or handle.

If you want your bag to match your shoes, no problem. You can find many evening bags in black, gold, or silver. If you’ve purchased dyeable satin shoes, you can find a similar bag and have it dyed with your shoes to ensure that they match perfectly. Many girls prefer the clear shoes to wear with their prom gown. A clear bag isn’t practical – you don’t want everyone to be able to see what you're carrying around, right? Evening bags adorned with clear stones or crystals look nice with the clear shoes.

When shopping for a suitable evening bag, you’ll find a wide range of prices. If you’re trying to get by with a cheap prom ensemble, you can do it! Read my hubs about inexpensive prom gowns, inexpensive prom shoes, and inexpensive prom jewelry. One way to save money on an evening bag is to buy an inexpensive bag and add your own rhinestones. I tell you how in a an article about stoning a dress. Just follow the same guidelines to add stones to your bag or clutch. The links are listed below, under the handbags.

After doing a bit of searching, I located beautiful bags for proms or other formal events, in a wide range of prices. They include designer bags, vintage bags, and clearance sale bags. These handbags and clutches would also be appropriate for weddings, cocktail parties, and practically any special occasion. I’ve listed them below:

Hello, Maita! I picked a couple out for my girls - too bad I can't purchase from my own page! lol.

Yes, Ethel, I agree. I have a mixture of expensive and cheap bags. I save my best for going out to special places and occasions, usually. Thanks for reading!

Carol, I was actually kinda surprised at Amazon's selection, too. After seeing their prices on prom gowns, I wish it had been around when my girls were prom age! Thanks for reading.

Thanks for telling us how it is. I never really think of Amazon for purses, but no reason why not. Especially if you are looking for something hard-to-find. Good hub!

Awww...thanks so much for the kind words, HH! I don't "dress up" often, but when I do, I like to look nice! IT seems I'm usually one extreme or the other. lol.
