The Artist Biography:
Hanna Ndukwe is an artist born in 1988 in Nigeria, who has been designing wears since 2006 and has attended several exhibitions.
She studied fashion design in the department of fine and applied Arts, University of Nigeria Nsukka (2007/2008- 2010/2011 session). Her secondary education was in University of Nigeria Secondary School, Enugu campus from 1999 to 2005 and she completed it in Ogudu Secondary school Lagos ( 2005-2006). She had her primary education in University primary school, Enugu campus ( 1993-1999).
Her work is predominantly fashion design, fashion illustration, cloth construction and exploration. Most of her designs are done with Ankara, tie and dye, brocade and net. She got her inspiration from Yinka Shonibare who is a sculptor but uses fabrics to tell stories. She tries to bring together contemporary art and African art to portray African pride. This showed in her work , “ Welcome Home,” where she used brocade, cowries, calabash, nsibidi symbol and map of Nigeria to make a couple wedding outfit.
Hannah Ndukwe uses African fabrics to make wedding gowns, suits, casuals, and corporate wears. Most of her designs are emphatically female and little emphasis on the males because of her obstinate belief in the strength of a woman. This is evident in one of her works, “ pride” using Ankara to make a couple wedding outfit with strong emphasis on the female ‘s wear and less on male.
Her exploration in fashion brought her the honor of being awarded “the most creative in faculty of Arts, UNN (2010/2011 session). One of the exploration works titled, “Heart of Cultural heritage and hospitality.” In this particular work, she used straw, empty cans, CD plates, foil and piece of Ankara to make a monumental garment for outdoor aesthetics.
All her works have something to do with “ creative” and “Africanity.” This has helped her to achieve lots of fashion works that are unique. She is a talented artist who devotes most of her time designing and constructing wears, making jewelries, hat and head pins.”
It is my pleasure to introduce this artist to the world because I trust someday the world will get to learn more about her and her fantastic works of artist.
