Argan Oil as a Skin Care Product

Updated on April 22, 2012

Not a single day passes where we do not see at least a few adverts for new miracle creams and lotions that promise to turn back the clock, but what are the natural alternatives? Argan oil is one of the more recent discoveries, and may be just what you need if you’re looking for a skin care miracle without the hefty price tag.

Its Origins

Argan oil is considered to be very precious and is sometimes referred to as liquid gold. The oil is derived from argan nuts, and these come from the fruit of the argan tree. Argan oil is almost exclusively manufactured in Morocco because this is where argan trees are found naturally. Production is done on small scale, and this may help explain why this oil is considered so precious.

Skin Care Benefits of Argan Oil

The high vitamin E content along with other essential fatty acids makes this oil a must-have when it comes to natural skin care. It not only moisturizes but nourishes the skin as well and the antioxidant content makes it effective against damage from free radicals. The works best when it’s pure, but you may see it as an ingredient of many anti-aging creams. Problem skin can also benefit from the use of argan oil, and wrinkles, psoriasis, eczema, and dry skin can all be treated with it. Another thing that makes this oil special is that it can be consumed, so it can nourish and moisturize the skin in that way as well.

How to Make the Lotion

The first step is to melt the beeswax over a low heat. You can use a double boiler to do this or just use an ordinary pot on the stove. If you do that, the key is to use very low heat. Once the wax has melted, add the argan oil and mix the two together thoroughly.

Slowly add the rosewater to the oil mixture while blending it with a handheld blender or electric whisk. The oil and water mixtures should combine to form a rich and creamy lotion. Once it reaches the desired consistency, transfer the lotion into bottles or jars and let it cool down. The lotion will become thicker and firmer as it cools, so add a little more rosewater if you prefer a runnier consistency.

Homemade Argan Hand Lotion

This simple homemade hand lotion is not only nourishing but anti-aging as well and can be made fairly cheaply. It helps protect and moisturize the hands, and it has a wonderful scent that will linger throughout the day.

65ml Beeswax

250ml Argan oil

65ml Rosewater

Everyone seems to be discovering argan oil and it’s fast becoming one of the most sought-after natural skin care products. You may not be able to find it at local stores, but you could order it online to get it from sellers abroad. Other alternatives include avocado oil, olive oil, evening primrose oil and even safflower oil. All these oils have very similar properties and may be a cheaper option for those of us on a budget.
