The Best Shampoos For Dry,Curly Natural Hair

Updated on November 12, 2015

Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo

Wash Your Natural Hair Without Removing Its Moisture

These days, sulfate-free shampoos are all the rage, but there are many natural hair lovers who were using sulfate-free shampoos before the sulfate free trend became popular. Personally speaking, my hair care philosophy revolves around chemical free hair care, and a natural consequence of organic products is the fact that they are sulfate-free. At any rate, this doesn't mean that moisturizing, organic shampoos are extremely plentiful. In fact, the exact opposite is true. However, there are a few shampoos and cleansers that remove dirt and grime while maintaining the moisture level of your natural hair.

These Suds Won't Dry Your Curls!

The Shea Moisture product line offers the Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention shampoo. It is a really good way to not only protect but also restore and improve the moisture level of your curly natural hair. It contains an abundance of moisture-rich ingredients: Coconut oil, shea butter, aloe vera juice, argan oil, vitamin E, honeysuckle flower and avocado oil. I love the way my hair feels after using this shampoo; it is lushly hydrated and full of softness! Another perk of this product for those who dislike glycerin is the fact that it is glycerin free.

Bentonite Clay and Pure Aloe Vera Gel Gently Purify Natural Hair

Bentonite clay is also another ideal way for curly girls to cleanse their hair because of the clay's ability to lift away impurities while protecting the ph level of natural hair. The ongoing trend that seems to be growing in popularity is to mix about 1 cup of clay to 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar. I have to say that I accidentally added too much vinegar to my mixture, and my hair was definitely not happy. It felt extremely dry and prone to breakage after my mistake. However, I didn't give up. Because of the way that my hair positively responds to aloe vera juice, I decided to use equal parts of bentonite clay with the aloe vera and found that my curls absolutely loved this combination! My hair felt smooth and very relaxed after thoroughly rinsing this mixture from my previously dampened hair, and the detangling process was definitely improved when I used this organic concoction.

This pure aloe vera gel contains no carrageenan or other chemicals. Its consistency is very liquid, making it a perfect complement to the bentonite clay for a cleansing hair or facial mask. Of course, aloe vera gel has other uses that are not just beauty-related. It tenderly soothes sunburned skin and also provides relief for stomach issues when ingested for medicinal purposes. Essentially, the beauty of aloe vera gel is the fact that it is a multi-purpose product that performs exceptionally well on all levels.

Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo

This shampoo makes shampoo day fun! It completely awakens the senses with the fragrant combination of tea tree oil and peppermint. When applied to hair, it produces a tingling sensation that warms and invigorates the scalp. As a result, blood circulation is increased, motivating the user to implement scalp massage for even more thorough cleansing. It also has an abundance of botanical herbs like mallow, horsetail, clary, thyme, eucalyptus, birch leaf, nettle, chamomile, yarrow, coltsfoot leaf, lavender and rosemary, all of which lead to gentle clarification of tendrils, coils and waves. Surprisingly, even though this shampoo does an excellent job of clarifying curly hair, it never leaves it feeling dry or damaged. It is a staple in my home, and I keep several bottles on hand at all times. It is available at your local Trader Joe's store for $3.99, which makes it even more awesome! It can also be purchased online at Amazon.
