The other view is that the word ‘pea coat’ stemmed from the word pilot cloth which was a thick coarse cloth used in traditional navy. The name pilot cloth over a period of time was then replaced by the word “P Cloth”.

The cloth then came to be known as “P- Jacket” and over the years as Pea Coat. However it was only in 1900s that pea coats started to become an essential part of a woman’s winter wardrobe collection.
