With the engagement of Prince William to Kate Middleton there is the expectation that a Welsh gold wedding ring will become de rigeur for the discerning, fashionable, young bride because, as for recent Royals, Welsh gold will be used in the wedding rings for the young couple.
Welsh Gold
Gold has been mined in Wales since the Roman times. It has been produced from three main sites:
- Dolaucothi Gold Mine in Carmarthenshire – this was closed in 1938 and is now run as a tourist attraction by the National Trust.
- Gwynfynydd Gold Mine in Gwynedd – which was closed in 1990
- Clogau Gold Mine – also in the Snowdonia region of Gwynedd. This stopped production in 1995 and closed in 1998.

Although the yield of gold from the Welsh gold ore was very high the production costs have been extremely high. This means that Welsh gold is mixed with other gold, produced outside of Wales, to bring the cost within an affordable range.
The business of production of jewellery is with the Clogau Gold company. This company produces various collection ranges of Welsh gold jewellery in welsh designs such as:
- Tree of Life – based around the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden
- Milestones
- Sessile Oak
- Inner Charm
- Wild Wales
- Am Byth – Welsh for 'forever'
Clogau Rings (Welsh Gold Rings)
These are produced with a touch of rare Welsh gold mined from the mountains of Snowdonia. They carry the unique Clogau gold and Welsh dragon hallmarks. All are set in a presentation box with a certificate of authenticity for the gold and, where appropriate, the diamonds.

Kate Middleton & Prince William Engagement Interview
Welsh Gold and the Royal Family
As one would expect, the Royal Family, with its Welsh connections, has had Welsh gold utilised in gold wedding rings. Those that have had wedding rings made of Welsh gold are:
- The Queen Mother
- Queen Elizabeth II
- Princess Margaret
- Prince Charles
- Diana, Princess of Wales
- Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
And with the impending marriage of Prince William, this association is set to continue with a gold wedding band being made for William and Kate Middleton.
