Gold has been mined in Wales since the Roman times. It has been produced from three main sites:

• Dolaucothi Gold Mine in Carmarthenshire – this was closed in 1938 and is now run as a tourist attraction by the National Trust.

• Gwynfynydd Gold Mine in Gwynedd – which was closed in 1990

• Clogau Gold Mine – also in the Snowdonia region of Gwynedd. This stopped production in 1995 and closed in 1998.

Although the yield of gold from the Welsh gold ore was very high the production costs have been extremely high. This means that Welsh gold is mixed with other gold, produced outside of Wales, to bring the cost within an affordable range.
