Wash Your Face

Washing your face regularly and keeping it clean will greatly help to prevent acne and clear up your face.

Washing your face too often may irritate your skin or cause it to dry up. You should try to aim for about twice a day - once in the morning when you wake up and once again before you go to bed. If you get more dirty than usually during the day there is no harm in washing your face an extra couple of times.

You don't want dirt and grease to stay on your face all day. That's one of the main causes of pimples. If possible, carry some facial cleansing cloths with you while you're out. That way you can freshen up and not have to wait until you get home.

It doesn't matter all too much what type of soap you choose to wash your face with. Most body soaps and face soaps are perfectly fine but certain types of face soaps have ingredients that help to fight acne.

You should choose one of the times that you wash your face each day to do a thorough cleaning. This means that you should do a nice wash with a soap or facial cleanser, an exfoliation, and apply moisturizer.

Steam Your Face

Steaming your face helps to clean your face and open up your pores.

YOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL while steaming your face so that you do not burn yourself. Hot steam can cause just as much harm as a hot element or pan. If you do not have a facial steaming machine you can gently boil a pot of water on your stove so that it's just hot enough to create steam.

Test the heat from a distance and see how close you can get with your hand before it becomes too hot. Slowly place your face near the steam (you can cover your head with a towel if you like to help keep the steam in or use essential oils for a fragrant spa-like experience), close your eyes and sit there for about 5-10 minutes or however you feel comfortable. Allow the steam to surround your face until it is moist or dripping then wipe it dry with a clean cloth. You can follow this with your typical cleansing routine or just apply a moisturizer.

Use Honey

Honey has antibacterial properties among other benefits and has been used for centuries for a number of health and skin care needs. Not only does it taste really good, it can be useful too.

Try applying a small amount to your skin once or twice a week for several minutes then rinse it off with warm water.

Exfoliate Your Face

Exfoliating has several benefits. It helps to smooth your skin and make it soft, it clears off dead skin cells and dirt, and helps to open your pores.

When Should I Exfoliate?

It is good to exfoliate once a day but at least two to three times a week is recommended.

How Should I Exfoliate?

You can purchase several different types including exfoliating creams, face washes, pads, scrubbers, and cloths. If you use a cream or wash, make sure that your rub gently and avoid getting it in your eyes. Even when you're rinsing some of it can get into your eyes and irritate or damage them. As well, if you use a scrubbing pad or cloth, make sure that you rub gently so that you do not irritate or damage your skin. A gentle rub or scrub is all you need.

You can read more about exfoliation here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exfoliation_(cosmetology)

Don't Pick at your Face

Picking at your face or touching it frequently can cause pimples, sores, and even scars. You should not attempt to squeeze or pick at acne. It can spread bacteria to other parts of your face and may cause scaring if you puncture your skin. In the video below, Dr. Oz explains how to properly and safely pop a pimple.

Change Your Pillow Case and Sheets

You sleep on your pillow for hours every single day and your face just continuously rubs on it. Hopefully you've done your nighttime cleaning routine and your face is fairly clean when you go to bed. If you haven't, you'll wipe a lot of the dirt and grease that's on your face onto your pillow. Even if you have cleaned it, some of the oil that your skin naturally produces will be rubbed onto the pillow case throughout the night.

You should attempt to change your pillow case as often as you can, or at least flip it over after one side has been used. You can change your pillow case every night or flip it over, use it twice, and change it every second night. Either way, you should at least change every few days.

If you get body acne, you might consider changing your sheets and bedding more often as well (in addition to showering more often, and possibly using an antibacterial soap).

Eat Healthy Foods and Drink Water

Eating healthy foods and staying away from junk foods is good in a lot of ways. Our bodies work better with the more natural things we put in them. Our skin also benefits from clean, natural, and healthy foods.

Try to stay away from sugars, white breads and starches, processed foods, and artificially flavored foods, and eat more vegetables, proteins, and whole grains.

Medication for Acne

If you have an acne problem that cannot be cleared up by using traditional methods such as the ones listed in this article, you can visit a doctor who may prescribe you a medication or cleanser that is stronger than the typical ones found in stores.

There are several types of medicated acne treatments. There are washes or cleansers just like the ones you see in stores, there are medicated creams that you apply to your visible pimples, and there are tablets that you can take orally which are very strong and cannot be taken by everybody.

Talk to a doctor if you have painful acne or acne that cannot be treated with traditional methods.
