Scents for holiday gifts

Scent for men: Tom Ford Noir

Buying a suitable holiday present -- whether for Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas or New Year's -- can be difficult when your loved one's the sophisticated type. You want to give a present that shows you understand them, appreciate that they love the finer things in life. It seems that women can't be without perfume and now, urbane men wear fragrance, too. You can't get more convenient than buying from Fragrancenet.com. I was happy to be hosted to experience it!

Tom Ford Noir is a 1.7 oz EDP that's housed in a hefty, square, glossy black bottle. It's perfectly sized for 3-1-1 carry-on travel bags, in case you're traveling during the holidays or perhaps your loved one is a jet-setter. When I smelled Noir, I experienced powdery notes with a burst of mint, drying to vanilla-like soft woods and florals. This is what they say about it:

Top notes: Italian bergamot, verbena, caraway, baie rose (pink pepper), violet flower.

Heart notes: black pepper, nutmeg, Tuscan Iris resin, Egyptian Geranium, Bulgarian Rose, Clary Sage.

Base notes: Opoponax, amber, Indonesian patchouli, vetiver, civet, vanilla.

Calvin Klein REVEAL for the women in your life

For the women you're gifting this holiday season -- but it's not too girly a scent, so men could certainly experiment with it -- an interesting gift choice would be REVEAL Calvin Klein. It's also a 1.7 oz EDP, suitable for TSA regulated travel.

The bottle is opulent and fresh looking -- like a giant gem -- but it won't stand up. You have to lay it flat on its side, requiring a much larger footprint on a vanity table or dresser. Only you will know if your loved one is the type to devote space and design to her toilette.

I experienced a whiff of green pepper and green stems, drying into a soft amber-y powder. I see it as outdoorsy, but with a soft side. Fragrantica.com -- a well-respected fragrance review site in the beauty business -- says this about REVEAL:

The composition is developed by perfumers Jean-Marc Chaillan and Bruno Jovanovic. Salt accords, white and black pepper at the top blend with the heart of powdery iris and ambergris. Sensual and rich sandalwood gives this fragrance the signature and constructs its base together with vetiver, sandalwood, cashmere and musk.
