Goshenite - The White and Colorless Beryl Stone

Goshenite Stone is a member of the Beryl family. It is the purest beryl variety without the chemical impurities which normally gives gemstones its color. This clear and colorless stone was first discovered in Goshen of Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA. This stone is therefore named after the place it was found first. Goshenite is associated with the Moon and is also referred to as Colorless Beryl, White Beryl or Lucid Beryl. Goshenite gemstone is not a traditional birthstone for any month. This stone has a hardness rating of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale with a hexagonal crystal structure. The base elements found in this stone are Beryllium, Aluminum and Silicon. The chemical formula of Goshenite is indicated by Be3Al2Si6O18 or Beryllium Aluminum Silicate. It is said that the ancient Greeks used this colorless beryl stone was to make spectacle lenses because of its clarity and transparency. Goshenite is also mentioned in ancient texts that it was very popular as a divining tool amongst numerous older traditions in Ireland. But in recent times, imitation jewelry stones resembling the precious and costly emerald and diamond gemstones are made by placing silver or green foil behind the faceted colorless beryl (or using a colored glue behind the stone) and then by mounting them in a closed setting. However, this stone can also be given colors like yellow, green, pink, blue etc by irradiating it with high-energy particles. Goshenite is often seen confused with other similar looking colorless gemstones like Quartz, White Topaz, White Sapphire and White Zircon. It is the Gemstone associated with the Zodiac Sign of Cancer and the Crown Chakra.

Goshenite is found in most of localities where the other Beryl Stones are found like Canada, Mexico, China, Pakistan, Brazil, Russia and the United States of America.

Goshenite stones jewelry can be used as daily wear jewelry which does not require any special care on a daily basis as the stone is quite tough. However, keep this stone away from hot temperatures as the stones mostly have small liquid filled inclusions in it which may expand and crack the stone. It is also advisable not to clean it on ultrasonic and steam cleaners. To remove grime and dirt from the stone soak it in warm soapy water for 5 minutes and scrub with a soft brush. Thoroughly rinse the jewelry in plain water and wipe it dry using a soft towel.

    I have been told I have a ring that is goshenite... but it seems to have scratched easily so I wonder if they got it right????? Was a gemologist that assessed it
