Shea Butter From Start to Finish

The process of making shea butter from start to finish starts with the karite nut trees. They grow naturally in the savannah regions of West and Central Africa. Shea butter is processed from the karite nut. Making shea butter is a lengthy, laborious process done by the women of their village. The gathering and processing of the karite nuts provide an income for their families.

Once the nuts dry up, they fall from the tree and are gathered up from the ground. After the nuts are gathered, they are steamed to loosen the shell and laid in the sun to dry. Each nut is cracked by hand and after all the nuts are cracked and the shell removed, they are washed. Again the nuts are laid in the sun to dry. After the drying, the nuts are separated by hand to chose only the best nuts to use in making the shea butter. The karite nuts are then crushed and are heated slightly to remove moisture. The powdered nuts are made into a paste by adding water and kneaded by hand. It is then warmed and cooled. The cooled oil is stirred in a precise manner to begin the crystallization process. When the oil begins to solidify into butter it is poured into containers and left to crystallize further. The stirring process is crucial in making a creamy shea butter, as it helps the crystals align as the butter solidifies. The finished product is pure natural shea butter.
