Create Simple Hair Accessories in a couple of easy steps for you or your Tonner and American Girl Doll
A Fun and Simple Activity
A fun activity to do with girls at birthday parties, scout meetings, or on a rainy play day is to create a flower accessory that can be worn with any hairstyle. It's a fun and easy craft project that each young girl can do with these simple instructions.
The following instructions demonstrate how easy it is to create this accessory with minimal and inexpensive materials.
You will need the following materials which can be purchased at any craft store and will allow you to create approximately 10-20 flowers depending upon the size that you choose to make each one.
Materials needed:
One piece of felt (any color preference)
One bag of pom poms (any color preference)
One piece of strurdy cardboard from which to make a stencil
Rubber bands (Small doll rubberbands about ¼” work the best)
One skein of embroidery yarn (to match the felt and pom pom)
Larger sewing needle
Scissor
Instructions:
Trace and cut out a flower of your choosing on the piece of cardboard. Daisies work very well or any flower that has large petals. The cut-out will serve as a stencil to trace on the piece of felt. After tracing the stencil, cut the design from the felt.
You can stack several pieces of felt petals for a fuller flower or use just one felt flower to complete this project. Now take a pom pom, two rubber bands and using the embroidery yarn connect the pedal (pedals), pom pom, and rubber bands as illustrated.In the center of the flower insert the needle with the embroidery yard through the pom pom. Do this several times for strength because the pom pom hides the thread so that it is invisible to the eye.
Once the pom pom is in place and with the needle on the back side of the flower connect the two rubber bands on the reverse side of the flower using two or three loose stitches. Do not insert your needle through the rubber bands because they will break and or weaken. Two rubber bands are recommended in case one breaks.

This is a very easy project to complete and the results resemble a professional item. Younger girls may need some help connecting the pieces, but they will be proud of the results.
