How to Straighten Hair Using Simple Guidelines?

Updated on September 21, 2015

Everyone has different hair type!

Hi Guys,

I love trying new hair products and so I wanted to write about a quick and simple way to straighten hair. This guide will help beginners achieve great volume to the hair and help reduce the frizz while straightening them.

I have dark black wavy hair. I don't use a straightener every single day nor do I use it every week. I usually straighten my hair every 2 weeks which means mainly twice a month. It can be really harsh for the hair if chemicals and heat tools are used on it very often. It really damages the hair and weakens it.

Everyone of us have different hair types. Some of the products recommended may or may not be for your hair type. If you have questions please refer to the comment box below.

If you want to know a simple and quick guide to straightening hair and some recommendations for hair products then please continue to read this hub!

Dove Hair Therapy Style+Care

5 stars for Frizz-Free Shine Serum

Step 1 - Prep You Hair

It is always a good idea to prepare your hair before you apply any products or hot tools. First, make sure your hair is washed and brushed properly. You don't want tangles before using any products. Then apply a frizz control product to smooth the hair.

If you have a lot of frizz in your hair like me, then one amazing product that works well is the "Dove Style+ Care Frizz Proof Cream-Serum." This is a affordable product that really smooths the hair from frizz. It does not give you a greasy effect and makes the hair shine. The scent however is a little strong. I have been using this for a while and I will defiantly purchase it again. The cost of this at Walmart.ca is $2-$3.

If you have split ends like me, then apply those treatments after the serum. I recommend using the "Herbal Essence Long Term Relationship-Split End Protector." It does help to get rid of split ends as well as prevent them from coming back. It does have a red raspberry scent. Hair feels super smooth after applying this product.

Step 2: Getting Your Hair Ready

Next, you want to apply some sort of heat protector to your hair. Do not skip this very important step. If you don't use the heat protector then you will start loosing hair overtime. You are then directly burning your hair. I use the "TRESemme Platinum Strength." TRESemme hair products give you salon effect if used properly. I have been using these products since college and I never think of going back to anything else. Of course, there are numerous other hair products that can be better then this but I have the experience of using this at the moment.

TRESemme heat protector protects the hair from hot tools that may damage the hair including hair breakage, frizz and dryness. Unlike other hair sprays this spray really makes the hair shine and smooth. It is a spray that works like wonders.

Another good feature is the bottle's nozzle. You can twist the bottom of the nozzle to close it. If you have toddlers in the house and they try to reach it, they won't be able to open it.

You can use any straightener that you have. This is what I use at the moment.

Step 3: Sectioning Hair & Getting Your Straightener Ready

After you apply the heat protector, brush your hair again. Then, taking your tail comb section your hair. This part is optional. Sometimes I don't have the time to section my hair before using a straightener. I simply take small portions of my hair and slide the straightener through. But if you do have the time then I would recommend sectioning hair as it will give you a perfect touch to your hair. Please refer to the article below to see how you can section your hair.

A very simple partition can be dividing your hair into 4 sections. Please refer to the picture on the side.

Then take you hair straightener in one hand and the portions of your hair in the other to slowly slide the straightener from the top of your head to the bottom. (TIP: Keep your straightener on hold for a 1-3 seconds before you bring it down to give it a smooth effect)

Repeat, until you complete all of the 4 sections of your hair.

Garnier Fructis Sleek Treatment

Step 4: Moisturize Hair

Make sure you use a hair product that will give you hair shine, smoothness and moisturizer after straightening them to keep it on hold. This will also keep the hair straight for a longer period of time to avoid repeating these steps again everyday.

I recommend using a product that has oil ingredients to keep the hair healthy and for a natural glow. A really good product is the, Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment. As the name states it has Moroccan argan oil to prevent the hair from any damage. For those who don't know what argan is. It is a plant oil produced from a seed of an argan tree that is found in Morocco.

This product has several benefits including, conditioning hair without greasing the hair, it gives long smoothness to hair, it keeps the hair sleek for up to 3 days, and makes the hair glow making it look very natural.

Lastly, comb your hair after applying a oil treatment into the hair. Voila! Your done! By reading it, it may seem a a lot of work! But trust me, once you get into a routine, it seems like a 5-10 mins process altogether.
