NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils: A Rave Review
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are fantastic. I was introduced to these beauties by some of the makeup gurus on Youtube. I figured if some of the biggest makeup geeks online loved them, I'd at least give them a shot.
I am a MAC loyalist. Their products and selection are great. Plus, I have very sensitive eyes, and MAC has never bothered me. For this reason I usually steer clear of other brands of eye products. Might as well stick with what you know works, right? But considering the rave recommendations on Youtube and the affordable price ($3 to $4 each), I got a couple of these pencils at Ulta to see what they were like.
I've been very pleased overall with NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils. They are very versatile and easy-to-use. I have had a great experience with them and not an ounce of eye sensitivity.
What is a NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil?
These are just what the name says. NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are over-sized, crayon-like eye pencils. You will need a special sharpener for them, or you can opt to depot them. They have a creamy consistency, and you can use them in the same ways you'd use a MAC Paintpot. Because of their pencil form, you can also use them as an eyeliner, but the jumbo size does make it more difficult to get a fine line.
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils come in just about every color you could ever want. There's also a good mix of matte and shimmer finishes. Note: if you are ordering online, search for swatches that bloggers have done. The swatches provided on NYX's websitee are not true-to-product.
Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Shadow Pencils are very similar to these. The quality of Urban Decay is slightly better (less creasing and sliding around), but the color range is very limited. Urban Decay is also much more expensive ($20 each).
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil As an Eye Primer
Some girl's like to use these in place of a primer. I find that they crease pretty badly when you do this. I suggest using a primer like Urban Decay Primer Potion, and then apply your NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil. Because of the creasing issue, I also suggest you avoid applying a lot of product in your crease area. These are best used on the lid and waterline.
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil As an Eyeshadow Base
Using these as an eyeshadow base is great. Be sure to use a primer first though. Apply your eye pencil all over your lid, and then put your eye shadow on top. The wash of color from the pencil will give a lot more depth to your look. Plus, your eyeshadow will stay put much longer.
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil As an Eyeshadow
This is probably my favorite use of NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils. Throw on some primer and swipe your favorite pencil across your eye. Blend a little with a finger and then you're ready to run out the door. Its a quick, easy way to pull a look together.
You can also use them a bit more creatively as eyeshadows. You can use different colors on different areas of your eyes for more depth. It will take a little work to get them to blend, however.
NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil As an Eyeliner
Honestly, these aren't the best eyeliner, but they do work. Because of their size, its hard to get a fine line. You may want to try applying them with a liner brush. Their creamy consistency also tends to smudge. If you're going for a smokey look they'll work just fine. Setting your eyeliner with a powder will also help this problem.
What I do like is that it can work as a liner if need be. I travel a lot and I appreciate a good product that can multitask. It just makes life easier. I also like that its an eyeliner that comes in a gazillion colors. If I'm doing a colorful look, I don't need to worry about finding a blue eyeliner that goes with my blue eyeshadow because my eyeshadow and eyeliner are the same product.
