Power Balance Band - What Is It For?

An increasing number of celebrities and top sports people have been spotted wearing a silicone wristband, known as a power balance band, but what is it for and is it any good?

Power Balance Band distributors have had to pull some of their advertising, after being hauled up for using phrases claiming the power balance bands would "improve balance, strength and flexibility". The slogan "Performance Technology" was also criticised as being misleading.

In fact, in a shock confession Power Balance Band distributors admitted to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission that there is no credible scientific basis for the claims.

Who Wears Power Balance Bands?

Here's a list of some celebrities that you might know, who have been spotted wearing a power balance band:

  • Andrew Strauss, cricketer
  • Robert De Niro, actor
  • Kate Middleton, actress
  • Ian Bell, cricketer
  • Shaquille O'Neal, basketball player
  • Marc van Gisbergen, rugby union player
  • Alex Reid, cage fighter

Some testing has been done - and distributors spoken to - and it appears that there's actually no benefit to be gained by wearing a Power Balance Band, except as a placebo. It's all in the mind, so if you believe you'll do better when wearing a Power Balance Band, then you probably will do!

The success of the Power Balance Band seems to have been entirely due to celebrity endorsement and the power of viral marketing, it's not been because of scientific claims or results.

What do you think?

Do you have a power balance band?

The power of the mind is a strong thing! I think that everyone should try one and if they work wear it. If not send it back where you got it!
