Sunglasses and Face Shapes

Updated on May 6, 2011

Many people are not confidence to wear sunglasses, or worry if their face is look more serious like a book nerd :) This is caused by many people are not really sure how to choose the right sunglasses for them. To find the right sunglasses for you, first you have to determine the shape of your face then you'll find the right sunglasses to suit your face.

Second, choose what kind of sunglasses you'd like to have, there are many cool and fun sunglasses type with many lens colors and materials.

The Shape of our Face

There are four major face shape, oval, round, square, and heart shape. But there are also face with wide-forehead (usually we call it triangular face shape, with narrow chin) and narrow-forehead or inverted triangular face shape with wide chin.

Oval face shapes

The most perfect shape of face, because people with oval face shapes may wear any kind of sunglasses. Oval face shapes are the most versatile because of their balanced proportions. Virtually any frame-shape suits this face, it is advisable to look for frames which are wider (or as wide as) the broadest part of your face.
Holliwood celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Toni Collette, Eva Longoria, Lindsay Lohan and Mary J. Blige (oh I love her..) are so blessed with their oval face shapes.

Round face shapes

You may make your face appear thinner by choosing a clear bridge over the nose, which widens the eyes. Round face shapes need a contrasting frame like square frame or straight or angular frame with soft edges will help add definition to your face. Sunglasses with double brow bars help pull the eye upward, adding length. Sunglasses with wider frames can help your face look thinner.
Celebrities with round face shapes like Miley Cyrus, Gabrielle Union, Katy Perry, and Jennifer Lopez, you may pay attention to them and see how they choose their sunglasses :)

Square face shapes

The main characteristic of these face shapes are the strong shape of the jaw. Square face shapes need a slightly curved frame in contrast to the face. These need to sit high enough, to minimize the jaw line. Another alternative is a narrow frame, one that has more width than depth, to widen the eye area. Sunglasses that you may try, soften angles with classic oval sunglass frames or round sunglass frames. For more definition, add feminine flair with curvy, cat-eye sunglasses.

If you have enough guts try John Lennon's sunglasses style. Or try to learn how Paris Hilton, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Wilde, or Kristin Chenoweth wear their sunglasses. I think they have square face shapes too.

Heart face shapes

Heart face shapes is similar with triangular face shapes. With wide forehead and narrow chin. Like AnnaLynne McCord, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, Reese Witherspoon, and Ashley Olsen. People with triangular or heart face shapes are suitable with the style which reflect the face, like aviator sunglasses or sunglasses with angular frames. Rimless sunglasses can also help lighten your overall look. Accentuate the eye area to draw attention away from a sharp jaw. Choose styles with a straight top line.

Inverted Triangle face shapes

With a narrow forehead and wide chin, you want a frame which widens the top part of your face, and narrows the chin. Brightly colored sunnies with lots of detailing can be a distraction from your lower facial area, and wide, cat-eye-styles will give the illusion of broadening your forehead and eyes.

Hi febriedethan, I love those glasses Angelina Jolie is wearing. The internet gives such a large range to choose from too, my main stumbling block was choosing my favourite! When doing my research I found a really helpful feature from Vision Express http://www.visionexpress.com/sunglasses/, they have a 'virtual try on' feature, this enabled me to try on glasses & sunglasses by uploading a passport style photo of myself, then simply selecting your specs!

I am a pilot, and aviator sunglasses work best because the shape and size provides the greatest overall coverage of the eye socket.

Looks are important, for sure, but functionality is even more important, which is why we pilots wear original aviator sunglasses.

The Ray-Ban Aviators are not the real original aviator sunglasses. The original aviator sunglasses have a metal frame and are non-polarized, as polarized lenses are to be avoided by pilots. Pilots need to be able to see the glint of sunlight off of aluminum airplane airframes.
