The Shirt Dress (Shirtdress) Is Back. They Are Great Dresses To Wear.

Shirt Dress Is Back

This is a photo of my grandmother with my grandfather wearing her shirtdress in the 1940’s. She always dressed neatly. My nice grandfather thought she was the best thing who every walked and he loved her dearly.

We use to wear these dresses in the sixties. I loved them. What's old is new again. A few weeks ago my daughter had one on and I told her how good she looked in her shirtdress. She didn't know what I was talking about. I explained her dress was called a shirtdress. She said she had bought it at Target and she liked wearing it because she said it was very comfortable.

The top of a shirtdress designed after a man's shirt. The dresses are neat and trimming on the body. They have a collar, button front and cuffed sleeves most of the time, but the sleeves have changed on some dresses and are puffed sleeves, short sleeves or long sleeves. Usually, they have a belt of some kind, tie belt or buckle belt. They have buttons all the way down the front. They were made of cotton and they often have pockets.

Today they're made of every kind of fabric. They have straight skirts or full skirts. Sometimes the buttons don't go all the way down.

They are the in style dress for this year. Everyone has them I was walking through Penney’s the other day and saw a cute one.

They come at all prices from $30.00 at Penney’s to $158.00 at Ann Taylor. I'm sure they cost more money by other designers.

They can be worn by everyone no matter the age.

It's hard to know how to spell shirtdress. I see it as two words, but the department store spell it as one word. According to Merriam-Webster, it's spelled shirtdress.

Popular Stores Sell Shirtdresses

It's now 2015 and the shirtdress is popular again this year. Cute with Levi jackets over the top. Macy's is selling some by Tommy Hilfiger.

They are so popular, L. L Bean has brought them back. Land's End is also selling them.

L.L Bean the red plaid dress has a pretty country look. If you're looking for one you can find them just about anywhere. This is 2015 and they're still available.

Many of the big department stores sell them such has:

Nordstroms Has Shirtdress

Nordstroms has many shirtdresses by many designers, Michael Kors one of the designers for the shirtdress called Michael Kors Chain Shirtdresses.

I believe even this year 2015 they're still in style according to Glamour magazine.

.Did you know Nordstroms has free shipping and free returns? I didn't know this until I ordered my granddaughter some shoes for her birthday. I don't know about you, but I love free shipping.

Wedding Dress

Wedding dresses are made like shirtdresses. Some have pockets and the buttons down the front.

I think they are so pretty and classy looking. Like the one in this picture from Wedding Knot. This one has a good price under $400.00.

I was watching the Bachelorette and she had on a pretty denim shirtdress. Heidi Klum was also wearing a shirtdress on one of the shows I was watching this month in 2015.

Vintage Shirtdresses

Vintage shirtdresses came in all styles and colors. Here are some of those dresses. You can still buy patterns for the dresses from sites like eBay.

We wore them with our spike heels and nylons.

I had one dress my friend in high school borrowed and I never got it back. My family and I had to leave and go home to the states and she never sent it to me. I hated losing the dress.

I bought everything I wore including the dress with my babysitting money. She's still my friend wonder if she still has the dress. Sure wouldn't fit now.

After I was married I bought shirtdresses. We wore them the same way with our spiked heels or very white canvas tennis shoes or sandals. It was one of the standard outfits for taking the kids to the doctor. Back then we dressed up to go to the doctor, get on a plane or even ride the bus.

Celebrities Wore Shirtdresses

In the sixties, actresses like Kim Novak wore the shirtdresses with the collar up. Kim always had her collars up and always looked sexy.

Television shows had shirtdresses.

On television, we often saw shirtdresses being worn by mothers like Donna Reed from the Donna Reed Show or Barbara Billingsley from the Leave It To Beaver show. The lady of the house actually cleaned house in their dresses. I never saw my grandmother wear anything but a dress with an apron over it.

They were the in thing for mothers even in the 50s.

I love the shirt dresses in the video below with the pants. Looks so nice and that is a very simple dress they are showing in the video.

Pretty in white. Holle Berry in her eyelet white shirtdress.

Shirtdress on the runway.

I went into Talbots and found this pretty pink silky shirtdress, had to get a picture. The price is $199.00. It's way out of my price range, but I thought it was very pretty.

Whether they’re oversized T-shirt styles or something more tailored, shirt dresses are pretty much spring’s perfect piece. After all, what’s not to love about the ideas of literally wearing a shirt as a dress?

Moonlake i do like shirt dresses though I haven't seen many girls wearing it except in old Hollywood movies. I do not know how easy or comfortable they are to wear but I do feel that these make girls look more beautiful and lovely. Voted it up and awesome.

This is a great Hub about shirtdresses! I was talking just the other day with some friends about how my mother always wore a shirt dress (and frequently her pearls) when I was growing up. She hardly ever wore pants. This Hub brought back some memories!

Peggy W, Your mother was right. What they now call capris and skorts, when I was young they called them pedal pushers and colottes. Thanks for stopping by and for the votes.

I wore many of them especially back in the 1960's and 1970's and beyond. Like you now I mostly wear pants outfits. They can be as casual or also get very dressy depending upon the styling, fabrics and such.

My mother when she was alive repeatedly said that "everything old becomes new again" and I have lived long enough to think that she is right. They can only do so much to change an outfit. Different fabrics, patterns, hemlines and such. So eventually they begin borrowing ideas from the past and simply reworking them a bit. Up votes!

Au fait, I use to wear them but now I just wear jeans for everyday and dress pants when I need to dress up. Thanks so much for stopping by I appreciate it.

I've always loved shirt dresses. They're classic style and never really go out of style. Epaulets and hems go up and down, in and out, but the basic style lasts indefinitely. Fantastic hub! Voted up!!

Shirt dresses were also popular in the 80's. I had 2, black and khaki. Both had interchangeable belts, which I loved. Change the belt and match the color of your heels and you had a complete new outfit! I'm glad they're back. Sounds like a shopping trip for me! Voted up, useful and sharing. Have a wonderful day! :) What, no share button!

You've hit on one of my favorite pieces of clothing. There is nothing like a shirt dress. It looks good on almost everyone and it's always neat. You've covered a lot of ground here from the forties to 2012. I'm really impressed with the wedding gown, beautiful and under $400 that's truly amazing. No vote up button but voted interesting and awesome.

Everyone looks good in a shirt dress. They make the waist smaller and are feminine but easy to wear and work in. I really enjoyed this virtual fashion show.

I loved the green one, safari style and look but I prefer the A-line with no belt. I haven't seen any shopping, but I am not much of a dress wearer unless it is for church and Kate can flash her nylons all she wants, I am never going back there again, lol Fun hub, thanks.

And funny you should mention Barbara Billingsly...just got off a Leave it to Beaver binge and wow, June Cleaver was one sharp dresser, surely the best dressed TV mom ever.
