Viet Jet Air an Airline that has Broken into the Market with Bikini Clad Cabin Crew

Updated on August 29, 2017

A New Airline and a Revolutionary Idea

Viet jet air is a low-cost airline from Vietnam. The airline started operations in 2012 and presently operates to 35 destinations. It is the brainchild of Nguyen Thi Phuong, who has become the first woman billionaire from Vietnam. The airline entered the world of civil aviation with a splash, as it introduced stewardesses in bikinis who did an impromptu dance and the passengers were free to take videos and photos. The airline will now operate to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, where the 98 percent of the population profess the Muslim faith. The airline would run a direct flight from Ho Chi Min City to the Indonesian capital. There was apprehension in Indonesia as the dress of the air hostesses will violate the strict Islamic code of women, not to reveal their bodies to the public. The airline in a statement has said that cabin crew on flights to Jakarta will be appropriately dressed. It has also said that "halal" meat will be served on board the flight, to respect the sentiments of the Muslim traveler as reported by the New York Times.

The airline is headed by a woman and as such criticism of the cabin crew donning a bikini has been muted. But the resultant publicity has made the airline popular and catapulted Nguyen Phuong to riches and fame. The airline started its service with a bang when five beauty contestants were hired to do an impromptu dance in bikinis. this was a big hit and passenger traffic shot upwards. The airline is spreading its wings and will soon be operating more international destinations.

A Look at Vietnam: a Changing Face

Vietnam for decades was under a communist government with strict controls but there has been a change and the new government is more open and encouraging private enterprises. For over a decade it fought the United States with tenacity and in one of the surprises of history won the war. It is an independent country and after Nixon withdrew from Vietnam, there has been a re-approachment and relations are better, but it has sour relations with China which at one time was its benefactor. The nation has a big dispute with China on the border demarcation and rights in the South China Sea.Both nations also fought a border war in 1979, and Vietnamese army more than held the Chinese army at bay.The differences came out into the open during the last ASEAN conference at Manila.

Future

Cabin crew in bikinis is a revolutionary step and there are no reports of any other airline carrying out such publicity stunts. It is difficult to think of such an act in any American airline. However, there is a catch as the airline will have to keep its hostesses fully clothed in flights to Muslim countries and this has been accepted by the top management. The airline continues on its upward chart in terms of passenger traffic and revenue. Viet Air is a distinct airline and operates Boeing medium haul planes. It has presently not announced any plans for any flight to the United States and North America, but hopefully, India could be on the horizon. The airline has just opened a flight to Vladivostok in Russia.

Nguyen Thi Phuong

The face of the airline is a lady. She is 47 years old Nguyen Thi Phuong who is from Hanoi and is married. She had her education in Russia and came back with this idea. The airline has done well and so has Ngyun Phuong. She is presently the CEO and the soul of teh airline.
