Beach Jewelery, Stylish And Cool Year 'Round

Updated on September 19, 2017

Stylish and cool beach jewelry has a special place in my collection. When you place the right piece on your finger or around your neck, instantly you're feeling beach stylish. I am trained in jewelry design by a German-trained goldsmith and I think that this training has guided me to understand how to interpret different stylistic themes in jewelry design. You tell me if you think I have hit the mark with all of the items I am recommending.

So, where did my love of jewelry design start? Long ago, having made and sold crafts, I saved my money to fly to Arizona with my boyfriend (who is now my husband) because he wanted to attend the Tuscon Gem and Mineral show. This was an inspirational experience that changed my life, forever, and expanded my interest and understanding of jewelry. From that time on I became enamoured with making jewelry. For years I dreamt of taking a course in designing sterling silver jewelry, only having learned from books. Once I finally started taking courses, there was no looking back. I am in love with jewelry and have been since I was a child. The world is forever richer because of the numerous opal rings I lost during my years of playing soccer. But I digress!

Because of this love for jewellery, I have developed a particular interest in wearable designs that highlight nature's gems. I am particularly attracted to these kinds of jewellery because of how they wear and how they feel when being worn. Here, I am providing you with beautiful jewellery options that will connect you with the earth and oceans so that you can feel the sand between your toes and salt breeze everytime you adorn your body in these gems.

Shimmering Shell

The joy of wearing shell is that it operates as low-wattage bling. If you want to play up the glow of your skin, especially with a beach tan (please wear sunscreen!), creamy shell jewelry accents the beauty bestowed on you by Mother Nature. If you choose to purchase shell that is set in sterling silver or precious metals, please be very careful cleaning your jewelry.

A jewelers cloth with rouge and a clean cloth to polish will be enough to keep your sterling silver glittery. When using it, avoid rubbing any shell or pearls. I know mixing pearls and metals is challenging for wearers, but I love them so.

I have collected pearls from sellers all over the world and my hunt for the perfect pearl will never cease. I visited an amazing ocean pearl dealer on the Isle of Wight in England, a locale for the most luxe quality pearls I have ever seen and talked with pearl dealers at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show, who sell cultured pearls by the bundles. I know I am not alone in my love these ocean gems.

In my most recent pearl searching adventures I have discovered a new kind of "pearl" - a nacre pearl. The distributor explained to me that these pearls are each a compound of shell. Unlike cultured pearls or fake pearls, nacre pearls will never lose their sheen and are extremely affordable.

Abrasives like baking soda remove the glorious sheen of shell and should not be used for cleaning.

A Pirate On The Beach!

C'mon - you know what I'm talking about. We all dream of riding the ocean's waves in search of buried treasure! If that sentence doesn't bring images of adventure into your mind, I do not know what will.

I am a world explorer and come of that title rightly so. My Granddad was a sailor and he traveled all over the world. My father followed in his footsteps, traveling near and far. I love to travel by boat from coast to coast, exploring beaches along the way.

When you can't actually get on a boat, but you can get to the beach, this pirate-inspired jewelry will tell everyone that you mean business. While Johnny Depp is older than me, his youthful portrayal of Jack Sparrow has captured the imaginations of swooning girls and swashbuckling boys. And I think most fans love how he means business as he swings across the screen, hanging on to a frazzled rope with one hand and his sword in the other. This is definitely NOT the experience of my Granddad, but I know how everyone loves a good yarn.

Pop on these little beauties and you'll be expressing your own Jack-Sparrow-essence to the world.

Coloured Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend!

Which colours of diamonds would you prefer to wear to the beach? I have my favourites, but I won't say so that I don't influence you one way or another.

Saving The Ocean's Creatures

It's hard to have the courage to handle an octopus - unless it's made out of silver and encrusted in crystals! I've searched the world over to find amazing ocean-inspired jewelry designs that honour the creatures that live beneath. I have a special place in my heart for the sterling silver sea stars which mimic the amazing hand-crafted silver and gold jewelry of Canada's Andrea Roberts.

I think the more we promote the value of sea life, the safer our seas could become. Many people really do not realize the impact we have on our seas, so wearing something like a sea star around your neck can provide an opportunity to open up the discussion about saving our seas. Many people do not realize the negative impact of microscopic plastic in our oceans that are there as a result of the use of microfiber cloths. Those microfibers are being ingested by the fish we eat. Not such a happy thought, but worth talking about.

I love to wear beach-inspired jewelry all year-round, along with dreaming of the warmth of a beautiful Emerald in the middle of winter. I really love jewelry - so much so, I studied jewelry design and now work in semi-precious metals. Even though I make many different styles of jewelry, I love receiving beautiful, heartfelt pieces that reflect not only my style, but the love and intention of the people who buy it for me. I will always hold dear items that Dad bought for me when I was young.

What kinds of gems and jewelry do you dream of owning? Do you buy it for yourself or do people like to buy it for you? Tell us all about your day dreams and share your inner desires for that perfect piece of metal and glittering gems.

And if that is not your "cup of tea" can you contribute to the discussion about our ocean environments and how to save our under-the-sea creatures, like Sponge Bob Square Pants? All informed discussions are invited.

@Sylvestermouse: YES! I do remember the puka shell necklaces. I never had one, either. A girlfriend came back from a vacation wearing one and I thought it looked "so coooool". Many years later I did buy one and, you know what? It didn't make me look cool, it made me look old! HAHAHAHAHA.

Shell jewelry is always beautiful! I remember in my teen years that I really wanted a puka shell necklace :) To this day, would you believe I still don't have one? LOL

@LaraineRoses: Oh LaraineRose! Thank you for the blessing. Yes, I have made necklaces out of them, but not just one on a chain, I make it like a charm necklace. You could also use them for a charm bracelet, or a very beachy anklet. I love your description of the pink shell earrings - they sound so lovely.

I have some pink shell hoop earrings that I love. They are light and make me feel very feminine when I wear them. I like abalone too! Before I had my ears pierced I kept losing earrings. I wouldn't have minded losing both but hated losing just one. What can one do with one earring? (Make a necklace out of it?)

      Lovely lens! Angel blessing**

@Cinnamonbite: I have spoken to people who have raved about pearls in the Phillipines. In fact, one woman talked about all of the many different shells that she remembered from her childhood, but I have not heard about the black peacock pearls. They sound very beautiful.

I actually have a friend in the Philippines and she goes to the pearl market and gets everyone pearls before she comes back to the states and visits. I didn't think I liked pearls until she talked me into some black peacock pearls and some funky-shaped brown/golden ones! You know how mother-of-pearl looks? Well, seriously, it's the mother of the pearl. That's where pearls are made! LOL, I never thought about it! All that iridescent color is a pearl! I already made a wish list for next year--a double strand of all the colors she can put together. Maybe some more earrings too.

@rallo-smith: Me, too. The ocean's treasures are free! If you find a particularly lovely shell, drilling a hole in it to use it as a pendant can be time consuming (a hand crank drill is the best, using water with it) but super rewarding.

I live most part of my life by the sea, my country is surrounded by the ocean, and seeing your lens and those wonderful seaside jewels reminds me of my home...those items are amazing with their features and colors...

I also remember my brother's gf who was also into making this kind of accessories.

If i have to chose what kind of jewelry i will buy i would go for pearls...white and timeless.

      Great lens...i enjoyed it.
