Body Shapers - Foundation Undergarments

Updated on October 8, 2016

What is a Foundation Garment?

A foundation garment is an undergarment designed to temporarily alter the wearer's body shape, to achieve a more fashionable figure.

Women have worn foundation garments, such as corsets and brassieres, for a very long time.

A Torsolette is a short corselette, covering the chest to the waistline, as the picture displays.

The modern-day Torsolette features lace-up or hook-and-eye fastening, as well as boning or vertical seams for structure and support.

Better known today as shapewear, these garments include body briefs, bodysuits, bras, control pantyhose, control panties, corsets, garter belts, and girdles.

An undergarment is similar to a Victorian-era corset, but with less compression of the ribs.

Bodyshapers - either as pantycorselette or open corselette - are a nice way to improve one´s shape. They are comfortable to wear. After wearing for some years now, I do not want to miss it.

For more shaping power a corset is the first choice. But it takes longer to get accustomed to it. By the way - the times when they used whale bones are long gone.

ezzly: Yes I did know that they used whale bones for corsets, thanks for mentioning that as others reading this article may find it interesting.

As you said thank goodness they don't these days, I don't think it would go down very well these days using bones from whales it would definitely be a no no.

      Happy New Year to you.

ubrish: Foundation garments are great to wear for a special occasion when you want to look your best, but I'm afraid I couldn't wear them all the time like some ladies do.

@evawrites1: Great for shaping your body especially for a special occasion or a garment that doesn't look right without the support in the right places. To me they are comfortable, just need to get them fitting right, after all they are mainly pulling in your stomach, lifting the bust and giving you a trimmer waist.

Wow these things look amazing (apart from contributing to a more harmonious body shape). I wonder if they are comfortable to wear though...

Great choices, It is too hot to wear a body shaper everyday but I would certainly wear one when going somewhere that requires dressing up.

I'm not going to wear one, but I'm sure they're more comfortable than girdles and corsets from years ago. Now you need to do a lens on body shapers for men - if there are any.

I can't wait to wear a corset for the first time. It's for the purpose of historical reenacting to give me a better figure under my dresses/gowns. If I like it, I might buy more to wear with every day clothing. Good lens :)
