Dog Tags are a nickname for what is also known as military personal identity tags. The name is self explanatory.

The first known dog tags were used during the Civil War here in the United States. They were not officially used by either the North or South, but made and worn by individual soldiers to identify themselves in the event of their death in combat. They were often crafted out of wood or even paper and worn on a string around the individuals neck.

The first official government use of dog tags began in 1899 by an American Champlain, Charles Pierce, however they were not made mandatory until 1913. In 1917 all American troops wore aluminum identity tags as standard issue on chains around the neck.

The sole purpose of military personal identity tags, is to identify the remains of a fallen soldier.
