Upcycling is turning an unwanted or otherwise useless item into something useable. Often turning the old item into something of better quality with higher value. For instance turning an old shirt into several scarves, or a skirt. Or turning scraps of clothes into a quilt. Upcycling isn't limited to clothing, but could apply to just about anything, perhaps an old shed or pile of scrap wood could be turned into into a picnic table, a tree house or a dog house. It's similar to recycling, but without the recycling center.
Homesteadpatch hit it on the head. Upcycling is re-purposing an item for a different use than originally intended. I tend to think of upcycling with clothing most often, where you turn one item of clothing (or multiple items combined together) to make a different article of clothing. This is also known as refashioning. The reality is though, you can upcycle just about anything. You're only limited to your imagination!
