Lolita Made Heart Shaped Glasses Iconic
Lolita - the movie
The first film adaptation of the novel by Nabokov was made in 1962 by Stanley Kubrick, and starred James Mason, Shelley Winters, Peter Sellers and Sue Lyon as Lolita. The infamous 'hero' of the book is Humbert Humbert, a middle-aged man who becomes obsessed with a 12-year-old girl named Dolores Haze, nicknamed Lolita. Is this erotica? Some might say so, but you're going to have to work hard, it's not an easy read or a comfortable watch. Perhaps you'd be closer to the truth if you saw it as a tragicomedy characterized by irony and sarcasm, however, it is difficult to get away from the distasteful core stheme.
The second film adaptation was made in 1997, directed by Adrian Lyne and starred Jeremy Irons as Humbert Humbert and Melanie Griffith as Lolita. It received mixed reviews partly because the dark comedy was replaced by romantic goo. The controversial subject matter delayed release and is just as worrying today as in the 1950's.

Heart Shaped Glasses and the 'Sweet Lolita' Look
Did Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita inspire Lolita fashion?
Lolita fashion seems to have originated in Japan in the 70's, largely influenced by Japanese rock bands from the Visual Kei musical movement during the 80s and 90s, but it really took off in the 90's and became something of a fashion subculture. A frothy, sweet heart sherbert mix of baby doll dresses and shoes, crossed with European vintage Victorian costume and, in another version, given a goth twist.

The origins of the fashion's name is not confirmed, but Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita is the obvious source. Having said that, Lolita fashion is far from sexually provocative other than the link with young girls. The Lolita influence is apparent in the female singer's costume in Marylin Manson Heart Shaped Glasses video (see below and the official version on YouTube Marilyn Manson - Heart Shaped Glasses offical video.

Heart Shaped Glasses by Marilyn Manson - Manson made heart shaped glasses famous in song
The heart shaped Lolita glasses play a big part in the Maryilyn Manson official video for Heart Shaped Glasses. The words 'Eat me - Drink me', which appear there, are clearly a reference to Lewis Carrolls famous childrens' classic Alice in Wonderland, and the vocalist's dress echoes the original Alice illustrations by Tenniel, but with a Sweet Lolita Fashion twist. Manson wrote this song after his teenage girlfriend, Evan Rachel Wood, turned up for a date.

Here's a snipette from Marilyn Manson's Heart Shaped Glasses Lyrics:

Don't break my heart,
and I won't break your heart shaped glasses.
Little girl,
little girl you should close your eyes,
that blue is getting me high. "
