Hello Kitty is the popular cartoon character created in 1974 by Sanrio Company, Japan. She is a white mouthless female kitten with a little red bow on its left ear. She lives in London with her parents and twin sister, Mimi. It is only in the mid 80's that Hello Kitty mania swelled and she became one of the most popular Japanese characters on earth.

Hello Kitty made her first appearance on a vinyl coin purse for the greeting cards company, Sanrio in Japan. She was the result of an in-house design contest and made her way to the USA in 1976 , two years after she was invented. It was not till the mid-1980s that her popularity grew. The original Kitty was targeted to children but in 1987 Sanrio began to produce a Kitty that would appeal more to the older audience. Hello Kitty had her own animated series in 1993. The biggest boost came when she was adopted by celebrities like Mariah Carey and Paris Hilton.
