How To Wear Plus Size Jeans

Updated on January 6, 2010

Plus size jeans are just as available, trendy and fashionable as any other sized denim. A lot of brand names and designers have realised that fashion for plus sized women is woefully under served and just because an individual isn't stick thin, they're no less interested in looking good and following fashion trends as any other woman.

Why should being plus sized rule you out of a shopping spree - and one that results in great clothes and fabulous fits?!

How To Wear Plus Size Jeans

How to wear plus size jeans is no different to how you'd wear any other size. No matter how big or small you are, you still have to factor in your shape. So, needing denim in a plus size should pose no more difficulties than it would for most other wearers.

Fashionable plus size jeans have been undergoing a makeover in recent years. Designers have realised (or finally acknowledged) that big girls really are both beautiful and expect to look as hot and sharp as their skinny-minnie counterparts.

And that's a good thing. Gone are the days when plus size apparel was less than fashionable. If anything, larger ladies found themselves purchasing swathes of material that appeared to be sewn together in order to cover their bodies - an outcome that missed its supposed objective of being ... fashionable and flattering.

A curvy body was a challenge, both for the designer and for the wearer. However, recent trends have shown a distinct leap forward when it comes to plus size fashion and as the design houses have begun to pay attention to detail, more and more plus sized ladies are looking hot, chic and on-trend.

It's debatable whether plus size designer jeans are worth buying, over the cheaper brand names. However, there is still the old adage of 'you get what you pay for' and for many women, a higher price reflects on the quality of the design, fit and feel of the jeans.

Unfortunately, no one ever seems to do a blind test when it comes to plus size denim. But, as with anything, style and fit will always win out over price when it comes to clothing. If you find the best fit and they're over budget, consider how much wear you'll get from them - don't dismiss them out of hand.

Or aim to check out the mid-price range ... True Religion Jeans, Joes Jeans, Not Your Daughters Jeans ... all of which are fast becoming as popular as a lottery win and not to be sniffed at when it comes to style and fit in regard to plus sized jeans.

Jeans For Curvy Women

Jeans for curvy women can and do look good, despite having more 'junk in your trunk'. Being a plus sized women simply means that you're an average-sized modern woman (completely true!) and there's no reason why you can't hit the style stakes running. All you need is a little know-how regarding what to buy and what to leave on the shelf.

A few rigid fashion rules and you'll be strutting your stuff along with the skinny girls - and looking just as hot and sexy:

  • buy dark denim
  • avoid anything that doesn't stretch
  • don't buy overly decorated denim - all they do is draw attention to specific areas of your body and as a lot of styles tend to splash appliqué and other equally eye-catching details on the ass area, don't be surprised when you draw glances to your booty
  • stay away from two-tone type denims - the kind that have a faded lighter color down the middle of the leg. They only serve to make your legs look larger than they actually are
  • unless you're a tall plus sized woman, do not indulge in cropped jeans or ones with huge cuffs - theses shorten the leg and add width
  • other than low-waisters, most styles will look good, providing you buy the correct fit, so be honest with yourself when trying them on
  • make sure the pockets (on the seat area) are small, close together and unfussy. They will slim your booty
  • if one of your problem areas is your thighs/hips, buy bootcut jeans. The flare at the ankle will add balance over all

When looking for a great pair of plus size jeans, take the above into account, add in a dash of honesty and you really will find the right pair that both fits and flatters your shape.

Don't be afraid to experiment or try on a dozen pairs until you find the ones tick all the right boxes. Now all that's left to do is flash those fabulous curves ... look good and feel great!
