What are rosary bracelets?
and why people wear them.
In simple terms a rosary bracelet is a bracelet made up of beads. As a general rule they consist of 1 large bead accompanied by 10 smaller beads. For Roman Catholics, the bracelet will generally include a hanging cross or devotional medal for example to a particular saint. Increasingly though, rosary bracelets are worn as pieces of fashionably jewelry and many people may not even be aware that is what they are.
Rosary bracelets are sometimes called the soldier's rosary since it is believed they were first used in World War I. A bracelet was/is easy to wear, easy to access and consists of one decade of prayer (explanation of decade is given below.).
Today they are popular with people from all faiths. While Catholics may used them as part of the Catholic catechism - those not of that faith will use them for their own prayers and meditations. Rosary beads are very tactile and form a link between thought and the physical world. They are great to use as worry beads - fingering them soothes and relaxes the user.
