Safety Razor VS Straight Razor Shaving

Updated on December 18, 2012

Looking For a Baby Butt Smooth Shave?

A safety razor or straight razor are both a great option for a close shave and less irritation.

However both do come with a learning curve, a straight razor more than a safety razor in my opinion. Don't expect to get a quick shave the first time around.

Is this the best razor for men with sensitive skin?

Many men with sensitive skin also find that using these types of shaving razors are best for sensitive skin because there is only 1 blade, which causes less irritation compared to razors with 3 or 4 blades.

Shaving Debate

Which is best? A safety razor or straight razor?

You MUST Buy Shaving Soap and Brush

The base for a smooth shave with a straight razor or safety razor is having a shaving soap and brush that you love.

This goes for any shaving method, using a shaving cream or soap that is designed for your skin type and that provide the lather you need will provide a huge benefit in the outcome of your shave and in protecting your skin from shaving woes (razor burn, razor bump and so on).

A shaving brush help to lather and rub in your shaving soap. There are many types of shaving brushes at prices. Cheaper brushes are synthetic and more expensive shaving brushes are made with badger hair.

Shaving With a Safety Razor

A safety razor, also known as a double edge safety razor, also requires some patience in learning how to use correctly but it is often learned faster compared to a straight razor.

The key is to not apply pressure against your skin with the blade but instead let it glide along your skin, letting the blade do all the work. Buying a safety razor with the right handle weight and width can provide a great balance for a close and comfortable shave.

Using a safety razor is also known to save you a lot of money compared to using disposable razor. With safety razors you only have to replace the blade and you can buy these in variety packs or your favorite brand of razor blades at very affordable prices online.

Shaving With a Straight Razor

A straight razor is, in my opinion, the most difficult upgrade (from a regular razor blade) because it requires more time and patience to learn how to use correctly and it also requires maintenance to keep the blade sharp, whereas with a safety razor the razor blades are disposable.

A straight razor is known as a classic and manly shaving tool, one that your grandfather may have used as well.

However, a straight razor will also provide a very close and smooth shave but it's not ideal for a man in a hurry. If you have time to shave and patience then straight razor shaving may be a great option for you.

With time and after many near-death experiences, you will master this manly shaving method and be able to use it more quickly and efficiently.
