Sunless Tanning

Updated on September 28, 2016

Self Tanning Moisturisers

Winter is almost here, and for most of us, our beautiful summer tans have completely faded by now. This year I am starting early with my "sunless tanning". But instead of going full blow with the tanning creams or sun beds I am putting my money on the moisturizing self tanning creams.

Unlike the classical tanning creams, the new generation of self-tanning body milks and moisturizers are a great way to layer up your colour as you moisturise. A dash of tanning makes them ideal for all of us who would love a light glow, but don't want to go too dark, too quickly. With no risk of streaking, you can have a subtle, year-round glow.

What Is The Difference Between Self-Tan And Gradual Tan?

Self-tan is a product that provides a medium to full strength shade. It is applied to the skin and left to develop for a period of time. The colour will develop for approximately 8 hours and will last 2 – 10 days depending on skin type and how you care for your tan. St. Tropez self-tan products have been specially created to give you the richest, deepest and long lasting tan.

A gradual tan is a gentle tan that can be built up to a medium to full strength shade when applied over a period of time. St. Tropez offers a wide selection of enriched, nourishing body moisturizers which combine serious skincare benefits with a healthy touch of bronze. Infused with soothing aloe vera, their fake tan products will help give you smoother, skin while building a gradual golden tan, every day.

Sunless Tanning

NutriBronze Visage by L'Oréal

For a beautiful and yet affordable Sunless tanning I would recommend NutriBronze Visage by L'Oréal Paris which at around 11 Euros is a good buy. A moisturizing skin-smoothing formulaI easy to apply. The body milk has an ingredient to help ease "orange-skin". The only disadvantage is that its perfume is very basic. You can even fin it in pocket format so it is easy to carry around in your handbag.

Apply evenly all over body. Wash hands thoroughly after use and let skin dry before putting on clothes. Use daily until you have achieved the desired level of tan, and then apply 1-2 times a week.

Summer Body Moisturising Lotion, by Garnier

Summer Body Moisturising Lotion, by Garnier  is also an excellent buy for a sunless tanning. Its formula is enriched with oils and its perfume is very summery. It gives you a gradual summer glow, enabling you to build up your colour over time. It is easily absorbed, making it perfect for use after your morning shower. You can choose the moisturizer for fair skin or the one for naturally darker skin. The main disadvantage is that you will need to use it at least for one week before you notice any change in your colour. If you are in a hurry and you have fair skin, you can always use the darker skin formula!

The result: moisturised, supple, comfortable and radiant skin, as well a gorgeous golden glow effect. Self-tanning has never been so easy!

Shiseido.

I would like to try Lait Hydratant Teint Hâlé by Shiseido. But the main disadvantage for this one is its price. At 30 Euros a go, it is a touch too expensive for some of us. I have only tried it in the shop, it has a lovely smell of flowers and a light texture. Its formula has a strong antioxidant giving a generous treat to your face. Used everyday, it promises a progressive tanning effect with a naturally golden shade .

Whatever the cream you decide to use, remember that the DHA content in self tanning moisturizers is less than in an ordinary self tanning creams and tanning sprays so you will see the results only long term. However, you will need to rinse your hands very well after use otherwise you can end up with "yellowy" fingers around the nails.

Did you know?

People tend to suffer a tan build up around dry skin areas like the elbows and knees, thus the importance to prepare the body with a good exfoliation before applying tanning creams.

Try applying a good exfoliating cream before applying a tanning lotion.  My choice goes for the Airbrush Sun Pre Tan Exfoliator by Sally Hansen which instantly polishes and softens skin for a perfect, more even tan.  Its micro crystals will help eliminate dry skin and rough spots so your golden bronze tan will look flawless, even and radiant.  The Sally Hansen Airbrush Sun Pre Tan Exfoliator is enriched with skin pampering Retinol to smooth, Aloe to moisturise, Chamomile to soothe, Vitamins A,C,E to nourish and soften and Glycerin to help maintain skin moisture.  A treat for your skin!
