Sequined Boho Skirts (Like Mine from Nepal)
Sparkle and Shimmer in Bohemian Style
I was wandering around in the Lakeside area of Pokhara, Nepal, when the sun glinting off something in an open-air shop caught my eye. A closer look resulted in a quick sale when I bought two sequined skirts, both of which I wore often during my trip, on the flights home, and many times since then.
These skirts, one of which is a mini and the other ankle-length, have just enough sparkle to add interest and an extra touch of "pretty" without being gaudy or over-the-top. They're also super comfortable and great for hot summer days when you don't want fabric sticking to your skin.
They're also perfect for all sorts of occasions, from very casual to dressy and even elegant.
At the time, I had no idea the skirts I bought in Nepal were considered "Boho" style. All I knew was that I liked them and would make good use of both.
While I'm not about to give up my well-used skirts (which have held up great, I might add), I did find some similar Boho-style sequined pieces on Amazon and eBay that you can take a look at below.
Photo credits: Other than the product images from Amazon and eBay, all photos on this page were taken by me ... which does explain why they're not so great. A fashion photographer I am not.
Somebody who leads an alternative lifestyle. They are not hippies because they can have an extremely wide range of different tastes in music, fashion, art, literature etc. They are usually very creative people. They are above all optimists, even if they can be very cynical too ... They like wearing a mixture of ... clothes and mix different fashions together just for the heck of it.— The Urban Dictionary
A Sequined Boho Mini
Short and Sweet
This unlined rayon skirt is very similar to my blue one above, not only in length, which is above the knees (21 inches), but also the beaded drawstring cords and the crinkled texture.
You can find this and other similar pieces on Amazon in lots of different colors, like purple, black, and bright blue.
Dress Them Up or Down
Feminine and Versatile
I get a lot of mileage out of my Bohemian-style skirts from Nepal, and I don't just mean the fact that I've traveled in them. Speaking of which, though, I find them perfect for the plane, train, or bus, because they're comfortable, cool, and already a little crinkly, so they don't get all wrinkled when you sit for a long time.
But besides being good for traveling in, these shimmery skirts can go for a day at the beach, to the office, or for a night out depending on what type of top and accessories you pair them with.
I've worn my Boho-style skirts with everything from a long tee and flat sandals to a dressy, light blouse with heels or a tunic-length sweater with calf-high boots. They look as good with a blazer as they do with a spaghetti-strap halter.
Mid-Length Sparklers - Light and Airy: Great for Summer
Each of these comes in a variety of colors, like blues and oranges, yellow, purple, and green. It may be a bit difficult to see the sequins in the photos -- because they're on the subtle side, which I like -- but get them in the sun or under the lights, and they'll shimmer as you move.
What IS Boho or Bohemian Style?
Some call it "hippy" fashion. Others call it "luxe grunge." And sometimes the word "chic" is added to the mix. Me, I call it relaxed, comfortable, sort of on the earthy but artistic side. Feminine without the flash, even when there's sparkle.
You'll often see images and symbols of nature in Bohemian-style clothing and accessories, like floral patterns, peacocks, or elephants like you see above.
The Boho-style is popular with lots of celebrities and models -- names like Kate Moss, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and Sienna Miller, to name a few of many -- so you've probably seen it more than you think.
Need some inspiration and ideas? Here are loads of photos of boho-chic fashion, with some familiar faces here and there.
This one comes in 9 pretty colors, the brightest of which are the orange you see here, red, and a vibrant sky blue, but you'll find earthy colors to choose from, too. Look below this product on Amazon, and you'll find other patterns too, like sequined peacock feather shapes, on the same type of long skirt.
Longer Sequined Skirts - From beach cover-ups to a dinner date
Pull one of these sparklers on over your bathing suit when you're ready to head to the tiki bar or to the Promenade deck for lunch. No time to stop home before meeting your significant other or friends for dinner at that nice restaurant? No problem. Bring along an appropriate top and something besides flip-flops, slip on some jewelry, put on some makeup in the car (before you start driving), and you're ready to go.
There were places I went in Nepal where it was not acceptable for women to show much skin. So I'd pull on my long sparkly skirt similar to this one and I was set to go.
