Union Suit: A Fresh Look At An Old Garment

Updated on November 20, 2013

What Do You Think Of When You Hear Union Suit?

When you hear the word "union suit", does it bring up images of Beverly Hillbillies? Do you think about frumpy undies with the trap door hangin' open?? (see photo)

Think again! Union suits are wonderful if you live in cold climates. Union suits serve double duty as a warm layer under your clothes and as nightwear. Since union suits are one piece, there is never the need to tuck them in. Union suits are great for lounging in the winter and a terrific was to save money on high heating bills.

Where Does The Name Union Suit Come From???

Probably Not Where You Thought!

The first Union Suit was patented in 1868 as the "emancipation union under flannel" because it combined a knit flannel waist (shirt) and pants (drawers) in one. So it was a union of a shirt and underwear in one garment.

What Do You Think About Union Suits?

To some, Union Suits are old-fashioned. To others, Union Suits are a cozy way to be comfortable in the winter. Where do you stand on this highly controversial issue? Are you Pro-Union? Or Anti-Union?

      Unionsuits provide me with the comfort of a t-shirt that doesn't climb back up when I sit down, and underwear that stays in place. I love the looseness that boxers provide, but they can't keep me warm, and unionsuits do. If you never have tried them do, as it is nice to have underwear coverage all the time without having to make adjustments. Long live long johns!

      @anonymous: Bill again,

      Looking for a Spring/Summer Unionsuit other than a Long Sleeve Suit, take a pair of Scissors and cut short the Sleeves and the legs around Mid Thigh. This will definitely serve your purpose. I have never done this because I enjoy wearing only Long Sleeve Unionsuits and Long Underwear Year Round. I hope this will be some help to you because I like being a Long Underwear Friend and helping anyone who Loves wearing Long Underwear as much as I do.

      @anonymous: I couldn't agree more. Hope your collection carries you through the milder times. Have you found any with knee length for wummer?

      I wear union suits about ten months a year. I have several different weights that allow comfortable wearing in spring and fall as well as in the long Canadian winter. Unfortunately, summer union suits no longer seem to be available, although one producer has attempted a version that has no buttons, nor does it have any functional flaps, either in front or rear, so that its usefulness is limited to one's house. It still is one of the most practical types of underwear available. I am sure that clothing companies couls sell more with determined publicity.

      I have worn unionsuits for years ever since Grandma bought me one at Sears when I was a 16 year old boy. Now I wear them here in Colorado from late September into May. They are the best long underwear made...for camping, skiing, and working outdoors. Unionsuits rule! Don't know why everyone doesn't wear them.

      Great lens and now I see they are what we call Long Johns. Have to look around to see if I can get one as Amazon hates Australians. They will sell to us but it is difficult to use their modules as they don't pay us commissions on sales so I don't buy from them either.

      Wear them all the time during winter. More practical than the two piece thermals.

      Yes, I wear them almost every day from mid October to Mid April. I am a teacher and I like the warmth they provide from the weather in the Northwest.
