Awesome Songs Made Visual - 5 Crazy Film Clips You Need to See

Updated on July 2, 2023

Al has been a radio announcer for longer than he can remember. When not in radio you'll find him writing his next masterpiece.

What makes a great song even better? A brilliant film clip of course! And when we say brilliant film clips, we don't mean the artist or band standing in a field somewhere playing guitar and looking melancholy - aka the Indie band go to when one member insists on making a film clip but the band is low on both locations and funds. No no, we're talking about film clips so amazingly off the wall, they're actually at least 100 miles away from any wall like structure whatsoever (ie The Atlantic Ocean).

Under that guise, here are five hideously awesome songs that like great cheese matched with fine wine (great now I'm hungry), were complimented with a truly bizarre but both highly entertaining film and memorable film clip.
Try and get these both out of your head and out of your mind if you can..

Awesome film clip - The Avalanches - Frontier Psychiatrist

What is a Frontier Psychiatrist? Is there an official course you have to take or do you start on a frontier somewhere and work your way from there in some kind of medical needs basis? We're not entirely sure but what we do know is that when you create a very catchy song featuring a whole collection of vocal grabs from movies and TV shows, one the of the best ways to turn that into a film clip is to hire a bunch of actors to perform them. This is also probably the only way you'll ever get dancing ghosts, horn players, cowboys, skeletons and an old lady playing the drums all in the same room together (and how often does that combination of words ever appear in the same sentence?)
Note: Having seen the Avalanches perform live when they opened up for Public Enemy years ago, I can reveal that they're just as energetic as this film clip. Enjoy!

Awesome Film Clip - Parlez Vouis Francais - Art Vs Science

For people who get slightly unnerved by mimes, the thought of a mime pretending to wield mime weapons would be slightly disturbing. And if that's the case, then two mimes having a mime sword fight let alone breaking out the automatic weapons must be positively terrifying! Luckily Art vs Science appear in the middle of it all doing what they do best: Rocking hard and no mime truly gets hurt in the end. Which is good for mime fans.

Awesome Film Clip - Knights of Cydonia - Muse

We're yet to find a travel agent who actually knows where Cydonia is (possibly somewhere near Middle Earth and just down the road from Braavos at best gyess), let alone can book us a ticket to get there but we're looking forward to our trip to see Kung Fu Cowboys, unicorns and robots running around in our day to day travels.

Seems like a rocking place and boy oh boy does Muse make it sound good!

Awesome Film Clips - Slam - Pendulum

Sometimes it's the simple things that work the best - cheese between two slices of bread for example. Scotch and coke. And endless hot coffee on a freezing morning.
And here in this film clip, you can't get any simpler than a guy who being weighed down by the rigours of life, parks his drop top Audi, strips down and just starts rocking out - because he can.
Fiendishly simple, incredibly effective. And look at this bloke go nuts out there! (I'm guessing no one warned the crowd this was about to happen either..)

And the final awesome film clip - Lucas with the lid off - Lucas

Okay we've got time for one more today and while this is a pretty cool clip to begin with that fits well with such a funky song, there's one thing about it that not too many people realise:

It's all one long continuous shot. Yes I kid you not, the camera never stopped filming from start to finish.

No cuts or second camera, Lucas runs behind the scenes when he's out of shot and gets himself ready for the next one. The genius work of Michel Gondry at play, it was what was going on behind the scenes that made it:

The video is a one-take black-and-white thing of beauty. I have a special love of one-take videos. It takes that extra level of skill and concentration to execute it! One reason why Lucas with the Lid Off strikes a chord is because it is complicated. Even though there are no edits and it is all shot in one take, the video is about the process of a song being recorded and released. We see Lucas at the decks creating the song before the camera tracks around a studio. Taking in a couple driving, Lucas on the Tube and him ending up in a cinema, it is almost like a biography of a song! The action ends back up at the start. Although the sets are fairly basic and there are not too many layers in terms of extras, the fact that everyone hits their mark and it is such a smooth process blows me away! Almost like a theatrical play, the actors are all in sync and there is no room for error.

-Michel Gondry on Lucas with the Lid Off produced in 1994

Watch it and consider your mind blown...
