Updated on March 14, 2011

Apple iPod Touch

If you don't want to sign up for a phone contract because you love your cell phone as it is, but you still want all the perks of an iPhone, you can purchase the Apple iPod Touch. It's definitely the best option for an MP3 player and pocket computer.

The iPod Touch is a portable gamer, MP3 Player, and personal computer all in one gadget. You can watch movies, listen to music, search the web, get directions and find your location, play games, and keep an eye on your calendar.

For all the great benefits of an iPod Touch, just check out what you can do with one. The gadget isn't that complicated to use, and with a little searching you can find discounted iPod Touches, whether you're looking for an 8GB, 32GB, or a 64GB. The older generations will be cheaper, but they won't have nearly all the cool benefits and features as the newer versions, so definitely look around for a cheap new generation iPod Touch.

With all the perks and features of an iPod Touch, the price is pretty big, but you can search to find cheap iPod Touch.

It's still an iPod, so the touch has to play music, first and foremost. You can download your playlist, flick through your music, and even create a unique mix that suits your mood.

You can flick through each album on your playlists and display the track lists so that you can find the perfect song for the occasion, and, if you want to mix it up, just shake your iPod touch to shuffle the music.

  • You can create Genius Mixes by syncing your iPod to iTunes and automatically search your library to find songs that sound good together, creating new unique mixes.
  • You can Create Genius Playlists is similar to the Genius mix, but instead of just making a mix, it sets up an actual playlist for you so that you can save it for later, refresh as you go, or listen to it right away. You'll be able to listen to different songs that you probably wouldn't have thought of together.

All you need to do if fill your iPod touch with the songs from your iTunes library from your computer or just buy and download songs directly from your iPod (then transfer them to your computer later).

You can watch movies, video podcasts, and TV shows where ever you are. This is a great feature to keep kids busy at the doctors waiting room or while shopping in the mall. You can view the the movies and shows with either wide screen or full screen by just taping and downloading the movie or selecting an episode or entire season of your favorite show.

You have access to onscreen controls by taping the display to bring up the controls which play or pause by chapter. You can also adjust the volume controls. Just tap twice to switch between widescreen or full screen, depending on your preference.

It's easiest to download your movies and shows using iTunes. If you don't want to buy, you can also rent. It's all up to you.

You can store up to 90,000 of your favorite pictures. Flick through them and share them via email or the MobileMe Gallery. You can save emails that you've received via email or what you've downloaded. You can set the pictures as your wallpaper, share them on the web, and download them to your computer.

App Store

The App Store is probably going to be the most used feature of your iPod Touch because it gives you access to over 75,000 applications, choosing from games, lifestyles, social networking, education, news, and more. Because the touch has built-in WiFi, you can access the store anywhere you are at anytime you want.

Just tap the Featured List to get a list of all the newly updated and released apps. Find out what's hot, check out the top apps, or search by category. If you know what you're looking for, then do a quick search for the application name.

Because there are so many different applications that you can purchase and download, you can use the Genius Recommendations that will help you find new apps faster and easier. The feature finds applications that you may like based on the apps that you have already downloaded on you iPod.

If you're worried about having to update all the apps that you want, don't stress about it. the iPod Touch will tell you when there is a new update for an app so that you always have he newest version.

Voice Control and Memos

The voice control works for the 32 and 64GB new generation iPod Touches. It gives you the ability to control your music playback with spoken commands. All you have to do is say and the iPod will play it, shuffle it, pause it, or name it. Just speak into the mic and rap the benefits of voice control.

As for Voice Memos, all you have to do is speak into the mic and record a memo. You can trim a memo, organize them, and share them. This is great for to do lists and reminders.

Find your location via WiFi hotspots. Find points of interests by searching by keyword, and then find turn-by-turn directions with traffic info for traveling by foot, car, or public transportation.

You can switch map views from regular Google map data to satellite images to a hybrid of both. Just tap to zoom, pan, and change your view.

The iPod features the Safari web browser, which typically isn't the most favored among internet users, but he's free and you can access it at any time you're in a WiFi point, as the iPod Touch has built-in wireless access to the internet.

Set up your favorite RSS feeds and check your favorite newspaper, blogs, or sports sites by setting up icons on your home screen.

Zoom the pages by taping or pinching the display. Also view via portrait or landscape by just rotating your iPod.

Get your mail right on your iPod as though you were on your computer. You can access your current email addresses as is without having to create another email.

You can view HTML emails and attachments in their original formats versus a stripped down version. You can rotate, zoom, and pan into a dozen standard file and image formats to include PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and iWork.

Access MobileMe, Google Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo! Mail, AOL, most industry-standard IMAP and POP mail systems.

You can compose emails instantly no matter where you are. Use the iPod touch keyboard and predicted text, which makes emailing faster and simpler. Just rotate the iPod landscape and you'll have more room to type.

Other Features

  • Calendar that works with Yahoo, Google, Microsoft Outlook, iCal, MobileMe, and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
  • Calculator that when in landscape also convert a regular calculator to a scientific calculator.
  • Contacts for phone numbers and email addresses.
  • Notes
  • Stocks

I'd buy a ipod touch if it already came with all the apps, or if you gave me the money, but i'll just have to wait for a couple of paychecks. Or i might just wait, it's really not a need, i just want it, so i'll wait, but still great hub with the information.
