Choosing the best camera, smartphone and others - How the internet can help

Updated on November 5, 2011

How the internet can help you buy things

If you can't decide which camera should you buy or what is the best smartphone for you, rest assured, the internet can help!. There are many websites that offer reviews of almost all electronic gadgets available in the markets as well as comparisons between items. Not only reviews and "Top 10" lists but there are websites that will ask you about your preferences in the phone you want for example, by asking you some questions and then giving you a list of suggestions for the best phones suitable for your needs!
I'll try to include only some of the best websites that can help you decide before buying things either from the internet or a shop.

Choosing the Best Digital camera

Whether it is a Point and Shoot digital camera, a DSLR, a semi professional or even if you have no idea which type of camera you should buy, help is here!.

One of the websites I like so much is My Product Advisor. It has three sections: Cameras, cars and TVs. It will take you in a series of steps where it will let you choose from a few options e.g.
Size of the camera: ultra-compact, compact, small DSLR or large. At the end of this process it will produce a list of the best cameras based on your answers. Also, the answers don't have to absolute, for each item/option you can choose whether it is desirable for you, undesirable or you are neutral about it, just use the mouse to move the pointer on that scale and you are done.

Reviews and comparisons
There are so many review sites available for digital cameras and DSLRs. Some of these are Dpreviews.com, cameralabs.com and cnet.com to list a few. dpreview also offers discussion forums where you can ask questions and discuss photography related topics with others. Amazon.com is an amazing site and the leading online shopping website but you can still use amazon to help you decide even if you are not going to purchase items from it, more on this later.

Choosing a smartphone

When it comes to smartphones, you will find an ocean of websites that offer advice, reviews and comparisons and you may feel lost. Make sure to check the reliable websites only. Some of the most famous websites for searching phones specifications and comparing between them is GSMarena and phonearena. Both are reliable and offer nice reviews of available phones and even the ones that are yet t be released.
If you wanna try a phone selector you can also try Vodafone's Selector. Another useful advice is to watch video reviews on Youtube, which again is full of reviews of almost all mobile phones known in the market.

There are also many smart phone online forums, some are specialized, e.g. for android phones which have some experienced users you can ask for help. Some people like to use Yahoo Answers, where you ask people questions and you may get lucky with an answer.

Amazon

Amazon.com is the leading online shopping website with thousands of items and products and so many great offers. After searching in it for a while you are very likely to find an amazing offer on what you are looking for. But even if you are not comfortable with buying things online, I recommend you still use amazon to check users reviews and opinions, people who already bought this stuff have written reviews on each product pages telling others what's good or bad about this particular product, check these out.
